Things we'd like to see in the new D&D movie

I'm tired of seeing movies about the heroes saving the world or the whole friggin' universe. What I'd like to see is something heroic on a much smaller scale, like in the movie, The Seven Samurai (remade by Hollywood as the Magnificent Seven).

Oh, and I'm tired of movies where a great prophecy or a secret prince/king/godling is integral to the plot. And, please, no more fantasy or sci-fi movies that involve a council or senate.

I'd like a D&D movie to have a party of seasoned adventurers who are brought together to save a village or town. However, rather than fortifying the town and fighting off a horde of orcs or something, the adventurers go into a dungeon to retrieve something or to set the people free or whatever. The head honcho of the dungeon should be something else beside some over-acting human megalomaniac; he (or she) should be an intelligent monster such as a dragon or a lich or a beholder.

The adventurers - i.e. the main characters - should have a representative of all of the most basic core classes and races: a paladin (human), a ranger (elf), a fighter (dwarf), a cleric (human), a wizard (half-elf), and a rogue (halfling).

One more thing: I do not want a lot of camp or tongue-in-cheek in the next D&D movie. And I do not want to see anachronisms and "hip" references like we saw coming from Marlon Wayans, in the first D&D movie.

I would have to concur with your statement.... leave the world saving for episode 6.....

NC-17? The Tomb of Whores, you say? I want to see this modu- . . . oh, wait, I just reread what you posted. This thread just got a thousand times less interesting.

That would be encroaching on BoEF territory and that's a different thread entirely.:)

Dragons have been done by them, a lich would just be seen as a typical horror movie thing but I would love to see a proper beholder fight a typical party of adventurers.

They should try to make up for that silly watchdog-beholder from the first movie.

The party could have a first encounter with the thing, a redshirt with a spear gets blasted by the Disintegrate Eye, retreat and plan for the assaualt. I think it could be neat to see them assess the monster and plan. Then the execution of the plan would be a little more understandable to the non-gaming audience.

  1. Get a real director. Not necessarily Spielberg, but someone who knows what they're doing behind a camera.
  2. Hire a real life honest to goodness production designer. Have him/her ask WotC for input about making the setting look like a D&D world.
  3. Take the setting out of freakin' Izmer and place the story in an established campaign world. I'm partial to Faerûn, but any official campaign world would do.
  4. Have fantasy authors/writers who have actually played an RPG work on the script (I hear Bob Salvatore has an FR script lying around somewhere.... ;)) or adapt a popular adventure or novel. Paul Kidd's White Plume Mountain was mentioned. I think his Descent into the Depths of the Earth would be a good choice also.
  5. Get ILM or Weta or another reputable effects house to do the EFX.
  6. If you're going to include canon monsters, use them correctly. No more rock-fetching beholders please.
  7. And most importantly - no more purple headed three-eyed humanoids!!

Just my 2 coppers.

Recognizable humanoid races. I want to see goblins, kobolds, orcs, bugbears. Your art department cannot come up with something cooler. Don't try; it'll only look stupid.

I want to see a recognizable uniquely D&D monster. Mind flayer is an excellent choice, or one of the demon types. Again, resist the tempation to screw with it too much. You'll only fail.

I wanna see: Fighter, Fighter/Rogue, Mage, Cleric. Four people is enough to keep track of. One should be non-human or part human.

I want a magic-casting character in the party that actually follows at least some of the rules: gestures, incantation, material component. I want to see some recognizable but 'uniquely' D&D spells: Magic Missle, Sleep, Haste, Spider-climb, Jump, Read Magic, Tongues, etc.

I want to see the mage as a useful full-time party member. Not a bumbler, or absent-minded. I want the mage to be male: with the exception of the guy in Dragonslayer and Gandalf, almost all spell-weilding people in movies are female. I want the woman in the party to have a big damn sword or mace and chop/crush peoples heads with it.

I don't want to see a spell 'misfire' for comic effect unless the caster is an apprentice, and even then not more than once. I want to see the party take into account magic when they make plans.

I want to see a cast spell fail on some people and not on others. Let the audience know that a spell is not a deus ex machina. It can simply not work.

I want to see heroes wounded, even almost to death, then be fine after healing prayers are used.

I want to see one of the casters run out of spells.

I want to see a potion or scroll being used. I want at least a couple of magic items seen; a sword and a ring would be nice. They should not in any way overshadow what the PCs do, though.

I don't want magic treated as something these people never see. It's a major part of their world and they should treat it as such. Same thing with monsters.

I want to see undead turned or destroyed by a strongly-presented holy symbol. I want to see the cleric beseech his god for his spells in the morning. Don't be afraid you'll tick people off. The people that will be offended by this are not coming to see it anyway.

I want to see characters in some kind of armor. Even the women. Especially the women. I don't care that it may hide part of your face; buck up and play the part, you're not here to pad your resume by jumping on the Tolkien bandwagon.

If you are not the rogue, you do not know Kung-Fu. You punch people or gut them with a sword. Let the rogue do all the fancy kicking, running up walls, wuxia-stuff, etc. I also want to see him dodge out of the way of something that gets the rest of the party.

If you are the mage, you do know how to fight. You are also not a fat roly-poly bookworm that's scared of his own shadow. You command the single greatest power on the planet. Act like it.

Tolkien is good. Tolkien is a god. Peter Jackson is a god. You are likely neither. Don't deliberately imitate any of the movies if you know what's good for you or you will quietly disappear in the night as a lesson to others. A single in-joke reference may be allowed, especially if it deals with dwarf tossing.

I want to see them go into a ruin, kill something, and take its stuff. :)

Things I would like to see:
- good script
- good actors
- good acting
- good directing
- good FXs
- good editing

and Skurge!!!

Things I'd like to see in the new DnD movie. Hopefully all of the finacial backing falls out and it doesn't get made!!!

Other than that:

I'd like to see them use 3rd edition rules or use an established story. There are so many out there that are good.

I'd personally love to see Dragonlance the dragonlance chronicles made into a movie, BUT only if they had the budget!

Let Piratecat direct!!
