I have a 13th level wizard who specializes in acid spells with energy substitution. The feat is worth it for me because I do keep a few spells unaltered to allow for different resistances. After you cast a few acid spells and mass resist acid goes off on the enemy you switch to sonic or electrical.

I like acid becuase of several reasons. Acid resistance isn't very common. it does full damage on objects. and burning and disfiguring people can be fun. :)

Researching new spells is very expensive even if the Gm is gonna go along with simply subsituting spells. Takes 1,000 + 1,000 per level to research and takes 1 week per 1,000. Way to costly.

The feat is worth it to me I had it since 3rd level.

Great advice...

Will check out options in complete arcane.

Will not do multiclassing as of yet...done the Mystic Thurge thing and well, didnt really like it.

Anyone else wanna spray in?

If spraying things with acid every way possible is your thing, defiantely warmage. You get a huge variety of offensive spells, and you can make as many of em acid as you want using esub. If you're a warmage with esub, if it can be done, it can be done with Acid. You also get your int bonus added to dmg of all spells, a feat that can add one more plus 1/4levels to all spells, and at 8th level you can wear mitheril plate without penalty.

As for roleplaying counsel, I'd recommend decking your acid wizard out in a stained and burnt leather tanner's apron. Sure a warmage can wear a mithral breastplate, but it doesn't work for me in character: something about storing acids with metals....

What you need (taking into account Warehouse23's sagacious comments above) is a 3.5Ed version of the old 8th level spell, Glassteel:

Glassteel 2Ed PHB (1st printing) p189
Alteration
Range: Touch
Comp: VSM
Duration: Permanent
Casting Time: 8
AoE: Object Touched
Save: None

The glassteel spell turns normal, nonmagical crystal or glass into a transparent substance that has the tensile stength and unbreakability of actual steel....maximum of 10lbs per level of experience of the spellcaster, and it must form one whole object.

Or perhaps a little help from a Psion?

All of the above are pretty cool ideas. Perhaps by straying away from the "pure wizard" format wouldn't a few levels as a Black Dragon Deciple add interest to the role of an acid mage? It would work even better with Warmage too, because in the end you get some boosts to your intelligence and Charisma.

There are some acid spells in Magic of Faerûn. One is a cone and one is like a second skin, somewhat similar to Fire Shield. Both have been created by Mestil, and are named after their creator.
