Thirst and Dehydration: How much water?

All the rules for thirst and dehydration talk about "one day's worth of water" without specifying an exact volume. It's abstract. So basically, it's up to the DM... but I think it would be most convenient to say 1 waterskin = 1 day of water.

If the DM has some other idea, he should tell you what he's thinking so you can act accordingly. If you bought 7 waterskins thinking that was 7 days worth of water, but the DM thinks it's two waterskins for a day of water (or whatever), I think that's a little unfair to you. I would say he should let you retroactively purchase whatever volume of water is 7 days' worth. That was your intention, after all.

It sounds like your DM is using some house rules for thirst and dehydration anyway. The standard thirst rules don't require any Endurance checks or lost healing surges until you go three days without any water at all. If he required Endurance checks that resulted in lost healing surges on your first day out, then maybe he was using the rules for hazardous heat. However, those rules have nothing to do with water, thirst, or dehydration - they are independent. So yeah, only your DM knows what your DM is doing... and it sounds like (though maybe not) he's just very determined to have some story where you run out of water.
