So I'm thinking of running a Kickstarter soon for a Super-Powered by M&M book pretty soon. I'm checking the forums first to help get an idea of what people might want from stretch goals and reward levels.
The book in question will be a genre and setting book for superhero games set in a dark future after most heroes have disappeared (inspired by comic's like Marvel's 2099 series and DC's Batman Beyond).
My first thought is about color. I like the idea of keeping the basic Kickstarter goals as low as possible, and that would mean a black and white book. Of course in a perfect world I'd love the book to be in color, so it makes a pretty natural stretch goal. The only thing is that printing color books are quite a bit more expensive than black and white ones. If it were a stretch goal, I might price the basic book level higher than what a black and white copy would cost just so I don't go broke printing them all in color. Would that bother you as a backer? Should I just skip the black and white and go straight to color? Forget about color and stick with black and white?
Going to other possible stretch goals, I'm thinking various kinds of added content. More sample villains, more adventures, more setting details. Do any of these jump out at people? Anything else you would like to see? I'm also debating having the extra content be in the book vs. as downloadable extras. I see the appeal of having it all in one book, but if I make stretch goals extras, it will allow backers to get the core book sooner, and that I'll release the extras as they are completed. Printing the extras separately would probably be cost prohibitive.
As to the higher pledge levels, here are a few things I'm thinking of:
Naming rights: You get to name a person, place, or corporation in the setting part of the book.
Villain: You help design a villain in the setting.
Hero: You help design a hero.
Battle maps: Probably will be featured in the sample adventures in the book. Hopefully also generic enough to use in other battles.
Bonus Content: Similar to the stretch goals (adventures or bonus NPCs), but this would be exclusive to the upper level backers.
Printed Bonus Content: Maybe they just get a print version of all the bonus content from the stretch goals.
Any other thoughts or suggestions?
