D&D 4E Thoughts on 4E from an "Outsider"...

I think you'd be happier with a different system, rather than 3E (or 4E, from what I can tell so far). I'd suggest B/X, Castles & Crusades, or Basic Fantasy. Lastly, the AD&D combat rules are very well suited to play without minis, IMO. You might want to check out Dragonsfoot; lots of discussion on all of these systems, there.

Actually, I think you'd be much, much happier with an RPG that isn't D&D. For a non tactical RPG, I can't recommend Evil Hat Productions' Spirit of the Century strongly enough.

You might also try Dread, Grossout... A system which I've recently found lends itself very well to old-school-style D&D adventures.

"Aside from a few occasions I have never used miniatures in D&D. As a DM I give them an overview of their opponents and the enviroment and they tell me what they want to do and how they want to do it.

Btw, "narrated" combat is normally much faster and more vibrant than using miniature combat, which breaks the flow of the game IMO."

That settles it. Some of you guys really are playing in a similar style to what I used to love, and it seems to be working for you. I think I'm gonna dive right into 4E when it comes out and play it my way, with a lot of house rules for movement and combat tactics. I'm sure there will be some growing pains with game balance and whatnot, but we'd figure it out sooner or later and still probably enjoy the game.

Thanks to everyone who replied. ALL the replies were friendly and insightful! By the way, sorry for the probably noob question, but what does "QFT" mean?

Hope it works out for you! I still can't suggest checking out Spirit of the Century strongly enough, though. If nothing else, it should prove a rich source of house rule inspiration.
