Thoughts on ELH, Epic Monsters, etc...

I'm not questioning that Buffy used the idea; I'm just surprised you thought that was the first time it had ever been used. Consider reading H.P. Lovecraft's The Festival (from 1925).

Oh, come on mmadsen...you know that literature and movies didn't exist before 1995. So there's no way that a TV show could be construed as a weak derivative of anything written in 1925, since, of course, such writing couldn't exist...

Maybe the idea frighteningly similar to the worm that walks was implanted in your subconscious by the Buffy episode that the thing was ripped off from in the first place?

Sorry, wrong.

Y'see, the worm that walks appears to be a template adaptation of the creature of the same name in d20 Call of Cthulhu.

Which of course was drawn from an old Cthulhu mythos story, which WAY predates buffy. (And Rifts.)

Looking down at the summary list, I see someone else has already mentioned this, but it bears repeating, if for no other reason that to emphasize to people out there who kneejerk about stealing ideas how non-unique most ideas are.

IMHO, they should update the Tarrasque and make it an Epic Level Monster. It has always had the reputation as being one of the toughest, if not the toughest monster, in existence.

That's because it was created as a task for munchkins. It really has no worthwhile feel to it, IMHO, and I won't use the stupid creature in my game. The creatures in the ELH are much more interesting, IMO.

Are there any plans for 3rd party Epic modules or projects??

There just may be after it hits the SRD. It seems to me that legendary classes from FFG's "Path" series would be a good fit for an epic campaign. In fact, I like them better than most of the ELH prestige classes.

Yes, most of the epic monsters are quite interesting, with the possible exception of the Brachyurus. Fenris deserves something better than to be related to these beasts. I mean, they have the abominations, powerful, evil, unloved children of the gods, and Fenris is among the closest fit for this type of creature. But what do they do? "He's a powerful Brachyurus" .

I was really shocked to see the Xixechal. A nearly perfect fit for one of my homebrewed gods!

As far as the Legendary animals are concerned, they are less for your party to fight, and more so that your epic druids and rangers can have animal companions that are still worthwhile at the higher levels.

I keep forgetting that! Music too! No, that's not Parliament or James Brown; it's a brand new hip-hop song!

Bah. Everyone knows that the worm that walks was originally invented by Robert E. Heinlein in his seminal Conan story, "The Worm That Walks". The copyright to the idea was bought by T$R when they acquired the rights to all of Heinlein's work after he died. This is why there are no worms that walk in any of Tolkien's stories, because T$R would have sued.

Hope this helps!

Um.

Robert E. Heinlein?

Try again. :)

Sorry. I meant, of course, Robert A. Heinlein, famed creator of Conan and founder of the Church of Scientology.
