I'm just bummed that this book came out AFTER I promised to run a d20 future game for my group.

I love so many things about it. I love the masterwork rules, i love the injury rules, I love the lack of items.

So yeah, I'm looking forward to running a game in the future.

I'm just gonna use the Black Company book for most, if not all, of my fantasy gaming games. I love the classes, the magic system, the gritty combat rules and battlefield conditions, the grievious wounds, etc...

I love it.

OK, I know nothing whatsoever about Black Company, but the love that the rules are getting in this thread makes me curious.

a) what is it about in a nutshell

b) can you point me to good online sources about
i) the setting
ii) these rules

Pretty please?
:D

Alex,

GULP! You really don't know anything about the Black Company   :uhoh:?

In a nutshell, it follows the exploits of the members of a mercenary company in very gray world full of bad, badder and baddest people. No paladins here! Many of the protaganists are not-so-nice and the antagonists are downright nasty.

The BCCS captures the Grim-n-Gritty flavor of the world with mechanics that allow low-to-mid levels to take out the very powerful under the right circumstances. Stealth, trickery, ambush and information rule.

The Green Ronin Mythic Vistas forum is a good place to start for the BCCS Book, rules questions, magic examples, etc: Mythic Vistas

Here is the Amazon link to the books: Black Company

Glen Cook's style is minimalist and direct - lots is left to the reader's imagination and there isn't tons of flowery exposition ala Robert Jordan and others.

Hope that helps!

Watch ordering from Amazon, though. I ordered the book a month ago and it keeps getting pushed back a week at a time. Originally said it would ship within the week. Now the page says it ships in 1-2 Months. Dunno what takes so long ... thought saving 20 bucks would be great but I would have paid the 20 by now to actually GET IT.

Bizarre. I ordered it about five weeks ago, Super Saver Shipping, and got it in less than a week.

Sometimes it just pays to admit ignorance, Phil! :)

I'll check up those links, and find out more. My FLGS might even have a copy to thumb through.

So many good games systems, so little time!

Cheers

Heap,

I wasn't suggesting he order from Amazon, I just pointed him to the Amazon section that lists all the Black Company books so he could do a quick review of the reviews (although I didn't state that). The BCCS book is, of course, listed for sale there.
