Thoughts on Patreon and Patronage

Morrus

Well, that was fun

So, about patronage. I see comments occasionally saying things like "But can't you just, like, pay a dollar and then get thousands of back issues for free?" Well, yes, you can (well, you could if thousands of back-issues existed; in my case, it's like 2 back-isses so far). But that's kinda looking at it ass-backwards.

Patronage isn't about selling existing content. It's about being paid to make more content. So it doesn't matter from a Patreon point of view that somebody is getting loads of stuff really cheap. What matters is that enough people like what you're doing to pay you to make more of it. The existing stuff is done; you're not "selling" it. You're saying, "hey, this is the stuff I've been making. Here, take it! Do you like it? If you want me to make more of it, throw a couple of bucks my way."

Paronage of the arts is an old, old thing. Crowdfunding that patronage is a clever new iteration of that. But patronage is about paying people to make more stuff for you, not about paying for the stuff they already made. It's about the future, not the past!

So, on that bombshell... if you like any of the stuff from EN5ider (5E) or from TRAILseeker (Pathfinder), throw a dollar or so into the hat and we can make more of it. And you'll get that new stuff. You also get the older stuff, but that's just a really fortunate side-effect!

Can I just say, Morrus, that you are completely awesome? And that I love EN World and the work that you do?

[No brown-nosing intended. This is my honest opinion. EN World has been a real blessing to me; it is a font of helpful and useful knowledge.]
