Three Plot Hooks Per Monster

Troglodyte - The local thieves guild is concerned. Several recent thefts have left local patrons upset that their contributions for protection have not been honored and are threatening not to pay. The only clue is that two small statues carved out of bone where found near a sewer entrance by a recently burgled store. The staute, a toad looking Lizard is readily identifiable as a carving of the god Laogzed - the trog god.

And now for something different

Some space fantasy twists on MM critters.

Proper Science Fantasy “space stirges:"
* “Puppet Masters” Switch the monster’s Con drain to Wisdom drain as well as adding the spell-like ability to cast Dominate Person has some interesting possibilities.

* “The Long Trip Home” The stirges have established a nest inside the biotechnological components of the ship’s hyperdrive. The FTL drive is now locked on and the crew will eternally streak through hyperspace until the stirges are exterminated and the components are healed. -- This version of the stirge doesn’t even require one to change the monster’s stats since the beast’s Con drain can be used on the hyperdrive.

* “Party Crashers” Some “energy” stirges clamped onto the power conduits of the crew’s airborne shuttle in mid-flight. The craft is losing altitude fast and it seems that pouring on the juice only makes the stirges fatter. -- Depending the ship rules one uses, the stirge’s Drain Attack will have to be modified to be applied to either the craft’s movement, energy or hull points.

And two examples using trolls and troll varients

*"Have You Got Your Troller's Card" Working the unstable underwater mines of Ocean Base Atlatifc is hazardous, but mindless work. Which is why scrags are perfect miners, until they revolt. The authories are not going to let anyone leave until things calm down, a great idea until the scrags figure out how to sabatoge the base and start having water flood the PC's sector. -- No modification is needed on the scrags (page 180, second column, the MM aquatic varient of trolls). Heck! the PC may even support the revolution, the point is that the scrags have made the PCs life hell beyond just a combat scene.
(edit: Part of the challenge in this scenario would be to halfway flood corridors so that scrags can keep their regeneration abilites.)

*"Deja Vu And Who Are You?" You are all on a base in the Antartic, when you get the message you have to save a couple of Swedes at another base. -- Give the troll a "reproductive" cycle such as Curse of Lycanthropy or Create Spawn and speed up the victim's internal transformation time to only 6 or less hours while outward appearces into a Troll form still take 24 hours. Now your team can feel the parinoia of the movie franchise of "The Thing."

With Tenchi Muyo and the elves of Spelljammer, we have decent examples of how forest lovers can travel space. Add with the small twist that dryads can use ANY tree as a teleportion point and you have a strange world of "advanced races" that use the Green as their base for technology, transporation and even a "ecocyberspace."

Mephits

Gotta love mephits. They're just so cute!

Air Mephits - In the middle of an ocean voyage, far from sight of land, the PCs' ship is caught in the doldrums. The ship's weather mage attempts to conjure a wind, but the spell goes awry and instead several air mephits are summoned. The mischievous creatures begin to drive the ship toward dangerous seas (perhaps a reef, maelstrom, or some mysterious island). Can the PCs discover the threat and catch the little blighters before it's too late? Was the summoning really an accident?

Ice Mephits - The village well has frozen over. Unusual given that it's the middle of summer. Investigation reveals that large sections of the subterranean water table is being frozen by swarms of ice mephits. As a result, the climate above is now quickly cooling. Were the ice mephits sent to prepare the way for something far worse?

Earth Mephit - Buildings in a borderland town have been mysteriously collapsing, and in some cases sinking completely into the ground. After the ground beneath a section of the town's outer wall softens into clay, creating a wide breach, a ransom note reaches the council: "Give us the (insert name of powerful artifact), or the town will be left defenceless against the marauding hordes beyond the border."

OT

Sorry--way off topic--excuse me--

Matt is that you? "Flesh to Marshmallow" Matt Black from KoP who taught me to game? Please tell me that it's you.

mscurio@yahoo.com

please please write to me there if it's you. Or even if uh, you're somebody else and you have no idea what I'm talking about and I didn't date you in eighth grade. What on earth are you doing in Melbourne? I must be mistaken--just someone's online handle--probably no relation . . . sorry.

Your posts sound like you though. Like the Matt Black I knew way back when.

'Scuse the hijack. We now return you to your regularly scheduled etc.

Sorry Sialia, it isn't me. Er.. him. At least I'm pretty sure I didn't date you in eighth grade. I guess Matt Blacks must all sound vaguely the same.

Hope you find your one.

- The Other Matt Black

(Sh*t, I don't think I dated anyone in eighth grade.)

Shocker lizard

This one comes straight out of a one-shot I ran in Atlanta...

A zookeeper has heard legends of a large yellow mutant shocker lizard that lurks in the jungle and wants it brought back alive. Once the pcs realize they have the opportunity to slay Pikachu they will face a terrible moral dilemma over whether to satisfy the zookeeper or whether they should kill the damn thing.

Sigh. Oh well. Thanks for letting me know.

Ah, but those were good times. Discovering gaming was one of the four best things about that year, and all four things happened in the same week. And falling in love for the first time happened pretty much the same day . . .

Thanks for the memories, even if it wasn't you!

Oh guys - Don't let this go!!!
Matt, Sialia this is quite clearly meant to be!! Forget the tyranny of distance and let this burgeoning romance blossom! After all Sialia, This Matt Black does sound like your Matt Black, and Matt - here is your chance to have the 8th grade romance you never had*...
Don't let this opportunity pass - you never know, it might be your last!

Oh, and Matt, that animal campaign sounds cool. You should run it some time.

*I too never had an 8th grade romance, but then, I went to an all boys school :(

Well, admittedly, I've had less in common with some of my romances than sharing a name with one of their old boyfriends. And, hey, Sialia does roleplay. Usually I try to hide that dark side of my life from people I'm dating for as long as possible. I can't stand the blank stare, and 'WTF?' expression you get when you try to explain it.

Delete?

No offense to Matt Black, spunkrat, and Sialia, but could we get back to Three Plot Hooks Per Monster? (And could the moderators perhaps delete this and the previous five or so post?)
