D&D 5E Thundertree: They did it...they actually did it...(Lost Mines Spoilers)

That was a super awesome read! Thanks for posting it!

I am running LMoP for the first time and am worried that my PCs will get toasted fast if they try Venomfang (Cleric, Monk, Warlock), but the module says he runs away at 1/2 hitpoints.
So if I was running your game I would have just had him take a disengage and full-move to fly away, leaving them to plunder his tower (since that is how I interpret the module's instructions).

But that would have been the wrong call (in your adventure anyway, my guys might need the help).
Not getting bogged down in what the mod says, and running the game with more flavor and pizazz gave your PCs a tougher time getting the loot, but also a hands down Epic fight. Ending it halfway would not have been nearly as satisfying, not for them or the DM I imagine, and it certainly took a big risk to get the extra XP for killing the dragon instead of just chasing it away.

This is a great example of why following the letter of the module is often not the way to do it.

That sounds like a fantastic fight, and it was a very enjoyable read. You played the dragon as well as the dice would allow, and you didn't fudgeto make the dragon survive. The players earned their victory. You sound like a great DM and it sounds like your players had just as much fun playing, and we had reading the story.
