I am running LMoP for the first time and am worried that my PCs will get toasted fast if they try Venomfang (Cleric, Monk, Warlock), but the module says he runs away at 1/2 hitpoints.
So if I was running your game I would have just had him take a disengage and full-move to fly away, leaving them to plunder his tower (since that is how I interpret the module's instructions).
But that would have been the wrong call (in your adventure anyway, my guys might need the help).
Not getting bogged down in what the mod says, and running the game with more flavor and pizazz gave your PCs a tougher time getting the loot, but also a hands down Epic fight. Ending it halfway would not have been nearly as satisfying, not for them or the DM I imagine, and it certainly took a big risk to get the extra XP for killing the dragon instead of just chasing it away.
This is a great example of why following the letter of the module is often not the way to do it.
