Tide of Iron Question

Spear Push extends the amount pushed by an spear attack by 1.

Ah, I see. Was thinking too literally. So, just to list Spear Push:
" Whenever you push a foe with a polearm or spear attack, you may add 1 square to the distance pushed."

So the crux of the question is: "if a power allows you to enhance the amount of squares you get to push with a power/attack, do you get to shift as far as they move or only just a normal 5-foot shift?", am I reading that correctly?

So really, it comes down to how you read Tide of Iron's one sentence on the subject: "You can shift into the space that the target occupied."

It reads to me that they meant that you shift a single space, unless you have some feat to allow you to shift more than one square. I'm with Karinsdad on this one. I don't think they intended, in spirit or letter, to allow you to push someone and then side-step, just because the target was larger.

Yeah, I think it's important not to hold PHB1 powers subject to the same standards as PHB2 and on. The wording was much sloppier back then, and the writers didn't take all of these crazy expansions into consideration.

IMO, Tide of Iron should let you shift 1, RAI.

The power grants you the ability to shift, not to use the standard shift move action. Many powers grant you a shift and specify how far in squares, or in destination square. Here they could have easily have said slide... but they didn't.

As for intent... sometimes it's hard to determine.

Except in the case of colossal creatures: their space can be 4x4 or larger. If the power allowed shifting into any square within their space that could also mean shifting 4+ squares (and thus potentially more squares than your normal movement).

...Except that Tide of Iron must be used on a Large or smaller creature.

... which the OP kindly omitted from his quote.

It's also another indication that the power should be clarified/errataed. Is there any other power with such a limitation? In the 4e lands of 'every power is created equal', such a limitation doesn't make sense.

IIRC, there are one or two Warlock powers with this limitation in the PH1.

It's possible that the reason for the size limit is to prevent shifts of more than 2 squares with an At Will power (assuming the PC is still sized medium). Course text of the nature "you can shift into the closest square vacated by the target" would have worked better.
