Tieflings fluff and crunch

Im working on using some tieflings as a PC race in a norse flavored homebrew Im working on. Its pretty basic Swords and Sorcery, with the "Norse" more akin to Normans than the sea going freebooting Vikings.

Anyway, theyve been led to a Celtic-ish Britain like isle populated with D&D races. I am putting a small kingdom of tieflings in the island. I call them Lothurings, as they follow Lothur (Loki), who as god of fire and deception, delivered them from their realm of Muselheim when things got bad there with Surt. Lothur placed them there to counter the Varangians, the humans, placed there by Odin.

Anyways, Im thinking of replacing cold resistence with fire resistence, and having them racially proud of their heritage, which they attribute to a fire drake ancestor somewheres way back. Not evil but roguish, scheming to their own ends.

My point is this, did tieflings exist in any popular literature before planescape? Ive found some info on random tiefling abilities but are there any more resources you all can recommend for flavor?

Thanks.

There have always been 'those touched by angels/demons'. Merlin is a good example. As for tiefling-esque specifically... don't think so.

Then again, t's been awhile since I've read any good books. :)

Green Ronin has a splat book called 'Assimars & Tieflings'. It's all about plane touched characters and how to build them (it provides a decent, if complicated, numbers system for figuring ECL).

well, being an atheist, i havent read the bible, but if you were to read the greatest bedtime story ever told i am certain you could find somehting in there.

As for Merling, yeah, in some stories he was a half-demon, in other he wasnt. i read a fairly good one, but i can remeber the name it it . . . Other than that, if you have a Britain-esqu island with demons, maybe have some Gaborchends running around. The were from celtic-legends, and were goat-headed humans. Not much description is given other than they way-laid many travelers on paths as such, and you could probably figure them to be pretty strong as such. anyways, good luck, and good job. sounds like you got somethign going.
