Time for a D&D Good Idea/Bad Idea!

Xarlen

First Post
Good Idea: Crafting a spell to protect you from arrows.
Bad idea: The side effect of said spell sends them at your fellow party members.

Good Idea: Casting Fireball.
Bad Idea: In a 10x10 room.

Good Idea: Playing a very in riched roleplaying character focusing on diplomacy skills, intimidation, with a flavorful backstory, who doesn't rely on combat to get what he wants done.
Bad Idea: Use the character for Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil.

Good Idea: test the wand and it's command word by pointing straight up. That way anything that comes out goes up.

Bad Idea: testing said wand in a dungeon room where the ceiling is only 12' high ... in a 2e game. Even worse, it happens to be a wand of lightning bolts.

I love these riffs! :D

Good idea: Carrying many extra glass flasks of oil when venturing into the dark unknown for an extended period of time.

Bad idea: Also carrying an open flame torch while traversing down the moss-covered entryway stairs with your 3 dexterity. :D

Good idea: Searching for traps.

Bad idea: Searching for traps by tossing an unwilling dwarf barbarian down the hallway...

Good Idea: Arming yourself with Alchemist's Fire, Thunderstones, Tanglefoot bags, and Acid Flasks.

Bad idea: Walking around ledges, windows, cavern walls, and having poor balance skills.

Worse idea: If you fall, and make it, then ask your DM what about all that equipment on you?

Knew a character that did this with grenades. Fell off a building, then had the guts to ask the GM the condition of the firepower that was strapped to him.

Good Idea: Buying Barding for your mount.
Bad Idea: Jumping in a river with the said mount.

Good Idea: Gnomish Bard with a large hat.
Bad Idea: who chooses a whip for it's grappling purposes.

Good Idea: Testing unknown potions on the local rat population.

Bad Idea: Discovering potions of Enlargement or Super Heroism.

Good Idea: Casting Fire Trap on a Door to inflict harm on the next person who uses it.

Bad Idea: Casting Fire Trap on the Mayor's Door, knocking 3 times, and then running away.

END COMMUNICATION

Good idea: You're an elf, and you lessen your encumbrance by not bothering to carry torches or any kind of fire-making devices into the dungeon; you can see in the dark, right?

Bad idea: you don't take into consideration the DM will use trolls against you.

Happened years ago (the 80s, at least, since that was the last time until recently that I did anything other than DM) with one of my favorite PCs. Got jumped by giant trolls, no less, while off on his own for a bit. Buh-bye!
