Time to learn new spells

1st point: the character is trying to learn new spells. This is a different process from scribing new spells. It takes a day (presumably 8 hours) to learn a spell and then another whole 24 hours to scribe it into a spellbook. The character is only trying to read the spellbook to learn the spells.

2nd point: riding a horse is actually work. I can't imagine you could really do any serious long-term studying while riding one. Buy a wagon.

3rd point: wizards don't make good traveling characters. I know many won't agee with me, but wizards and traveling don't mix. Wizards need lots of time to do their thing: studying, scribing, and making items. These activities require a dry, stable environment, i.e. a house or castle. A lot of DMs like to run games with little or no downtime: "you defended the nixies from the wizard and his giant minions, but now you must find their druid protector who will restore their defensive magic. With the nixies in danger, you dare not tally one day from this quest!" Yeah, it hard to be a wizard in a lot of games!
