In 2004 I went to the Vancouver East Side. In order to keep my head above water in the continents poorest postal code where people do crack and heroin on the sidewalk I worked as a tutor at the Carnegie Community Center. You literally have to look at the ground you are walking on to avoid stepping on an AIDS infected needle.
They had recently made the aquisition of 2 complete computer labs useable by East Side residents, for the cost of a dollar for a year long membership.
"How do they pay for this?", I asked a friend I made who helped run the lab.
"The Microsoft Foundation. Bill and Melinda Gates."
I will never have anything but the highest respect for these two people. They deserve this award. They did something concrete to help Vancouver.
