Timetravel for characters....

First Post
Do any of you great people out there have any good ways of creating timetravel in D & D... I DM a Greyhawk campaign and want to have characters travel to different time periods and am looking to have a "feasable" way to timetravel.

I plan on throwing them into the timestream at various levels from very low to epic so I really dont want them to have access to an artifact. Any ideas and help would be great.

In my games I used Talamar, God of Magic. He was able to do that for the PCs. Only did it once, though.

I tend to want to stay away from divine influence or at least direct influence..... Thanks though....

Let's see no artifacts, no deities hmm...
How about some kind of "time elemental", a creature from the timestream that has access to the timestream? Or maybe a system of time portals or gate(like planar portals)?

Non-Unbalancing time-travel has been used effectively in my game, and in the last game I played in:

1.In my FR game, the PCs were able to borrow an artifact that could do it, but it required amazingly high spellcraft DCs and tons of research to truly control without finding a place with extreme amounts of ambient magic. Even so, unless the user is quite Uber, it requires using all the ambient magic in the area, even some that you probably shouldnt (i.e. wild magic). This gives the DM a lot of contro lover whether or not it works. Furthermore, messing with the timestream is something that the gods frown upon, so the players knew not to do it without good reason.

2. There is an ancient time machine in a remote desert valley full of giants that is very difficult to operate and has traps and guardians that reset each time.

Why not an artifact? I mean, there is nothing that says the artifact has to do anything other than have the ability to bend time. So if your concern was to not give them an uber-magic item that they can do other things with, then, well, simply don't allow the artifact to do anything other than time travel.

Not arguing, just trying to understand.

Of course, artifact may seem to common a choice so perhaps that is why you said no to it?

No divine influence, and no artifacts. Well, that leaves ultra-powerful beings with uber-arcane abilities. Perhaps they have to find that one particular being to help them in each of the time periods. "Go back 30 years? yeah, if you want to get back home from the past, you'll have to find that same ancient dragon to send you back." :)

Or, how about some combination of things -
Ancient druid myth about how when the stars of of a proper alignment and (insert some other contingents) the person who stands right in the middle of the sacred grove of stones is sent to another time...
The other contingents could be complicated (like things they have to do in very distant locations and then still be back at the grove in time for the star alignment) or it could be less taxing like covering themselves in sacred oils while ancient druids surround them and chant in unison (using a secret spell that is 9th level that has to be cast by 10 druids at one time to have any effects).

Then, in these other time periods, they will have to find similar sacred druid sites AND wait for the proper star alignment in that time period ("What, we have only one week until the stars align? we have to move fast" or "what? they won't realign for 3 months? what will we do to kill time once we vanquish the bad guy in this time period" :-))

Anyway, I'm rambling now. sorry. hope something in my rambles proved somewhat helpful.

Unmoveble Time Gates always worked best for me, they aren't portable so players can't get too wild.
A villian could be chased thru one, the player can't just destroy the gate because the villian will do his evil deeds posibly causing world changing events, so the pc's must persue.

Gates...Hmmm...

fba827.... I guess I do not want an artifact as to give them a control factor over the travel... but, yes.. I could only make timetravel the only function of it... but I cant see why 1st or 2nd level characters would have an artifact... and I did not see your post as an argument... all ideas welcome.

Gates... I really like that idea... I think I will go with that.... I guess now I have to flesh out who created them and why.... Good in itself....

As for what times... I plan on having them go back from 300 to 6000 years in the past....

There are a number of options:

- Dream Sequence: the characters wake up inhabiting the bodies of their ancestors (past) or descendants (future). Remember if the characters don't survive they die (with regards ancestors anyway)!

Already sort of mentioned...

- Conjunction: celestial alignment shifts (not just the PCs) but an entire town/kingdom/country through time.

- True Dweomer: cast by a mage of power millenia ago takes effect when the PCs enter the ruins of his tower.

- Temporal Wake: PCs swallowed by a Time Beast.

I would have to agree with MythandLore that Time Gates are probably the easiest solution to your problem.
