"Timing" sessions

for a 4 hr game I plan 2 big encounters and 2 small
the small ones are frequently roleplay or puzzles and I count on characters spending at least 15-30 min resolving interparty problems (which I always design in)
The 2nd small encounter is easily removable, and I check time before starting it. Im not sure you can do a one shot, limited time game without some railroading.
I should put in a third small encounter to use if players are ignoring RP
but this has only happened once in my converntion games.
I use one shot games to avoid paying convention fees and to try out new players.
