I'm putting this in a new thread because I think it's been lost in the main discussion.

Where in Manhattan will The Meeting Place be?

I'd like to get a more solid idea so I can set about "fitting things in", but remember this is your setting, I'm just tying things together, so if anyone wants anything in particular bring it up and we'll see.

Points so far:
  • We are not changing the overall landscape of NYC so that people still have streets and landmarks to refer to in the game.
  • Even so, the World Trade Center is not to feature officially in the game in reverence of peoples mixed opinions of its use for this.
  • A chunk of area around TMP is under setting control, so if you want to have something for your character within that area you must email me. (pounamu@wizardsmoderator.com)

On the old boards there was a discussion of the location and people wanted:
  • useful stores eg. illegal arms dealer, cafe etc
  • a top secret government interrogation center
  • an airport somewhere within a 3hr drive
  • a huge church with people willing to help you at a moment's notice
  • a pub/sports bar
  • a large park (where anything can happen in the darker hours of the night)
  • a grand hotel
  • a casino

Well, some of the stores will be taken care of by character businesses. :D And don't forget if you want your little piece of real estate for your character within the setting-controlled neighbourhood, send me a description of the business, who owns/runs it plus any notes on where exactly you might like it.
The casino was ruled against.
If you'd still like some of these other things, they will put restrictions on where TMP might be...

So voice up folks, or I'll pull our a map and start throwing darts at it!

I was just over at the old boards last night archiving some stuff. There were threads on both the Rules board and the General OOC board. Somewhere in one of them I saw an actual street address decided on. I don't know if it was later revoked, or it was still the consensus.

  • I do believe the church was Vetoed because it breaks the COC.

however, some better ideas instead of a church may include:

    -A support group
    -A hospital
-some non-descript cult based entirely on doing good deeds
-Various guilds for support of 'different' people (I.E. Mutants)

-A hospital

This is the one I'd go with, because it seems most in touch with the real world to be able to dial "911" when your in trouble.

That or maybe some chartiable organization like a shelter or soup kitchen.

Just my two cents.

I agree on the hospital being a good choice. Especially when one considers that:
a) There's no prevalent magical sources of healing in the setting.
b) The prescence of guns and heavy, high speed vehicles to be used as weapons.
And:
c) The aforementioned elsewhere average speed of the traffic in New York City. Having a hospital close-by would make it a much more viable option.

You've got La Guardia, JFK International, and Newark International airports, plus there's probably a few smaller airfields for private planes, air freight companies, and so forth.
a large park (where anything can happen in the darker hours of the night)
There are several of these throughout the city, but the biggest (and most infamous) is of course Central Park.
a grand hotel
ditto the above, as well as universities and other institutes of higher learning, hospitals, museums, art centers... well, you get the idea. There is probably at least one of everything in or near Manhattan.

The street address previously decided upon then got abandoned as it was apparently an area where a bar/nightclub could not be due to by-laws... or something.

Ok. the closest airport to Manhattan appears to be La Guardia... How long to get there would depend on traffic. It might be 10km or 6 miles from the edge of Manhattan, I can't tell well. This lil book only offers the address of the New York University Medical Center.

Hospitals:

Bellvue Hospital Center: in Gramercy, on First Avenue between East 25th and East 30th Streets. Not just a psychiatric hospital, as most people believe. Emergency Room services are available to anyone, with no restrictions, including ability to pay.

NYU Medical Center: next door to Bellvue (see above).

Veteran's Administration hospital: on the other side of Bellvue from NYU Med Ctr.

Mount Sinai Hospital: Upper East Side at 5th Avenue and East 98th Street, bordering on the eastern edge of Central Park.

New York Hospital / Cornell University Medical College: East Side on York Avenue, between East 68th and East 71st Streets.

St. Luke's - Roosevelt hospital: at Columbia University, in Morningside Heights. Morningside Drive between West 113th and West 114th Streets.

St. Vincent's Hospital: Greenwich Village, on 7th Avenue South between West 11th and West 12th Streets. The largest Catholic hospital in the US.

What areas of New York would someone find a warehouse in? ;)

And meanwhile...

You approach the Night Club in a busy Manhattan area of New York. The year is 2030. A bright sign over a curved entranceway tells you that you are now looking at The Meeting Place. You pull the door open and hear the sounds of music playing, people chatting, or glasses clattering behind the bar. A sign just inside the door tells you this is a non-smoking establishment and no patrons under the age of 16 are permitted on the premises without a legal guardian. Welcome to The Meeting Place Night Club.

The harbor and waterfront areas, naturally. Also in the garment district, or the major shopping areas like Fifth Avenue, Madison Avenue, Columbus Avenue, and certain areas of Greenwich Village. (Of course, a grungy warehouse would be an eyesore to the posh retailers and restauranteurs, so it would be kept out of sight behind the storefronts.)

There would also be a few warehouses along Broadway for theatrical props, scenery pieces, and costumes.

I imagine warehouses could be found almost anywhere except in the fancier residential neighborhoods. Think working-class, low-rent districts. (Low rent being a relative term in New York...)
