To play, or not to play.....that is the question.

Hello everyone, I am QD, and I am new to this forum. I would like to inquire about a few things. First are there any unspoken rules, or paths of etiquette I should know about before proceeding with too many post? If so, I am all ears. Secondly I want to know for those of you who play alternate systems, what attracted you to them, and why did you stop playing your old system?

Hi, welcome.

Follow the community rules and you should be fine.

I play a number of systems and don’t have just one. I do have favorites by genre and type of experience. An old system may be replaced by a new one if it works better for me.

Examples.
Fantasy was D&D and is now PF1
Sci-Fi was Classic Traveller and is now Traveller Mongoose 2E.

As @payn said, check out the community rules. One commonly overlooked one is that if a mod says something to you in red you should not reply back in the thread (you can message them if you have a question).

It would be unusual for someone to start a whole bunch of threads at once, but replying all over the place seems par for the course.

If its a long thread you don't recognize, its sometimes handy to see if the first post is from a decade ago and then go find the most recent ones before replying :)

If you think you're imagining that a few topics seem to show up in different threads with the same disagreements between the same people, you probably aren't imagining it.

The pineapple pizza thread is for random comments - but not for ones identifiably about other threads on the site (see its first post).

Also, don't be surprised if the thread you're looking thru veers off-topic every now and then. Sometimes one of us posters will bring up an interesting side-topic. ;) It's how some of the topics on EN World have lasted so long.

Oh cool, why did you make the switch from the big dragon?
Thats...a long story so; come sit, and listen for awhile.

I was captured by the "Big Dragon" as a wee lad. I had tutors of the game from other friends and adults I found out who played. They were much into what would be called OSR RPGs today. As 2E came along and settings got more and more support I became fans of the Dragon more for the worlds and stories. 3E launched and it was a mechanical wonderland (that I learned after through painful lessons had some sharp edges best to be avoided.) Though, the adventures kept me coming back.

4E launched and...well I wasnt along for the mechanical revolution ride it offered. A lot of the settings I loved got significant changes, the adventures were not appealing. Which was all ok, becasue the folks delivering the best adventures were continuing on with 3E instead. They published their house rules and came up with their own setting. They delivered both frequent rules supplements, and great adventures. The "big dragon" as you call it got left in the dust. I stopped paying attention, the brand no longer had a hold on me.

5E was announced and the message was they wanted to make a big tent for everybody the dragon ever appealed to. A clarion call if ever there was one, but it also seemed too good to be true. So, I playtested and gave survey feedback. The rules turned out...ok. They were not as in depth as id like, and I was not going to get regular supplements which was a bummer. How about the adventures? Unfortunately, not frequent enough or interesting to hold my interest either. While I felt the 5E system was my second favorite (turns out thats the case for a lot of folks) I simply rather be playing something else.

So, back to Pathfinder for me. Then, they too decided to revolutionize their system and launch PF2. Its....a good system like 4E, but im not interested in what its trying to do. So, today im still sitting in my nest with a homebrewed PF1 using Paizo adventures when able. (There are so many I could use this system for the rest of my life). Though, what has really happened is Im exploring more narrative based games, more adventure types, simply other experiences. Fantasy genre has taken a back seat to other interests these days. The "Big Dragon" hasnt been able to regain its hold of me as a brand.

Oh and where do I find these rules you speak of?
Pathfinder 1, 2 and Starfinder

Mongoose Traveller
Traveller SRD

  1. Never trust a Bard.
  2. Never work for a dragon.
  3. Your DM is always right.
  4. "It's what my character would do" is no reason to be a jerk.
  5. ABL - Always be leveling.

As Payn and Cadence mentioned, check out the community rules - they are the hard and fast guidelines for conduct.

As far as alternate systems, I’ve played Shadowdark, Shadow of the Weird Wizard, various PBTA games, Mothership, Forbidden Lands, Lancer, and DCC in the past two years. This was coming off of two 5e campaigns that our group played to 20th and 16th level respectively. Our DM was getting burn out from the 5e system and wanted something easier to prep as well as something more narrative in focus. I was just happy to be playing a lot of new games. Not everything clicked for every player, but I feel in love with Mothership, and I dug the gonzo nature of DCC.
