To Scott and Linae

My. Oh, my.

Next time you're in Renton let's grab some coffee or drinks. I guarantee by the end of our conversation your opinion on us not caring will be different.

Okay, misspoken and I apologize. I would rephrase that to say that there are CERTAIN elements in WOTC's hierarchy that do not concern themselves with the opinions of 3PP developers and there was a definitive effort by them to limit greatly what could be accomplished via the SRD. I imagine they would not read these posts. So in that, I retract my previous statement.

Too bad that your caring couldn't be converted to something that wouldn't seem to have alienated just about every single 3rd party publisher.

Ah well, I guess I should be grateful that you have saved me a ton of money. Or maybe tomorrow things will look different. One can always hope.

I don't know Linae personally (Hi Linae! I'm Hyrum. You don't know me, but I know people you know and vice versa. :>) but I think that comment is a little uncalled for. Both Scott and Linae are working in a structured environment with a lot of stakeholders who have competing interests and what they want isn't always what we'll see, but they still have to live with it.

I may not like the GSL as written, but I'm not going to blame Scott or Linae. I've worked in similar companies and been in the position they're in right now and it isn't fun, so lets try and keep this civil shall we?

Hyrum.

The invitation for coffee/drinks is still open. :)

Please don't get me wrong. I was in no way blaming Linae (nor Scott for that matter) for the GSL as it is. I merely pointed out that I am sorry, that considering how passionate she feels about it, and how much she seems to be for a good amount of 3rd party support, it has amounted to very little (This is based on my own reading of the GSL as well on the various reaction from different publishers on these boards). I am well aware that neither of the two are in charge and make these decisions.

I still hope that the GSL will turn out to be not so bad as we think, and that 3rd party publishers will be able to take some of my money to supplement all the 4e stuff that I intend to buy from WotC. I guess that makes me an optimist, compared to most people on these boards. ;)

Cheers

You don't know me, so I will excuse your momentary naivety. I will allow this brief foray in my psyche by simply saying...I am a sad, sorry, individual with little in the form of external stimuli. My friends are few and my interests fewer. I don't have much of ah...ah <snaps fingers>--personality! So I ACCEPT your invitation in the manner in which it is offered.

Just my opinion ... but you're just hearing the results of massive disappointment.

I think folks who enjoy 3p products (and created same) expected more. And they've been expecting it for a long time.

They'll get over it.

But don't expect a lot of folks to sign up to the GSL. There's not much carrot to balance against the stick. ;)

At any rate, thanks for doing what you could.

Just throwing this into the ring ....
I don't know how much influence Scott and Linae had over the GSL (and I doubt anyone outside the company will really ever know).
But I've been a person who's been in the bad position of enforcing an unpopular policy while working like mad to change that policy to something more acceptable.
I don't know Scott. At all.
But I do know Linae. She's smart, kind, and funny. And I think she is a really good person.

I think that Linae had and has the best intentions for this project and isn't the sort of person to just give up in the face of opposition. I'm sure she's heard your complaints and concerns and has made every effort to present them clearly and rationally to the rest of the team making decisions about the GSL. You may disagree with the GSL and what she has to say about its current incarnation, but she is not your enemy. Please treat her with courtesy and kindness.
