To UK players: Do you see these problems?

Rules Lawyering and Munchkinism, both yes. sadly too much IMO.

I'll argue over some details but not every last detail. Most of our gaming group have been together forever and a day (like 25+years?). Paladins have been brilliant, character-filled classes; the ones that we have had have really proved valuable in driving the story forward and integrating with the gameworld society. Typically we don't use many supplements so munchkinism is limited (plus we are all happy to house-rule against things that don't make sense to us, taking the 'rule 0' option and running with it).

Anyway, I've spent two years or more lurking on these boards and on the WotC boards, posting little bits every now and then. I've played with maybe 15 groups in the last ten years, and now have settled down with two solid groups. But reading the boards (which I'll admit are Yank-centric), I seem to see problems like these a lot, and found it strange that in 15 years of playing the only one I've ever seen is Munchkinism, and then not to any great extent (maybe three players in all that time, and not the awful kind I've read about elsewhere, but the mildly over-the-top kind).

It also seems that, when I chat to Brits online about these things, they tend to respond in similar ways; i.e. they never really see these problems the way our American buddies do. Thus, I thought I'd test out my theory.

I'm glad to see very few of us Brits have awful paladin players! (A moral superiority thing I have going. ) But the other results surprise me a little. Perhaps then, is it the well-known fact that we Brits tend to complain less and just get on with it?

I was DMing a group of Singaporeans studying in the UK using 2e rules around 1990-1993. Do my experiences count?

Anyway, I didn't see any of the above behaviour then.

Even after I got back to Singapore, I've only encountered one rules lawyer (who I don't play with anymore) and some munchkinism (which is encouraged in my group to a reasonable extent - it is not fun to either play or DM for ineffective characters).

Yes that option should have been there.

I've definitely seen rules lawyering and munchkinism - neither too much in my regular group, but over the years with other players, especially at cons.

I admit that compared to some, I haven't RPed with vast nu,bers of people. But genrally in the groups I game in, I am the one who is most likely to be considered a 'rules lawyer' or 'munchkin'. The latter is simply the pleasure of seeing the way teh system fits together, and I have no problems acceding to a DM's changes.

The 'rules lawyer' aspect comes, I think. from years playing World of Darkness games. Because those rules are so fluid (actually not, but we agree to let that go in most of the groups I have played in), people get out of the habit of checking the rules of other games. I find it imp[ortant to remind Refs that there is a rule for a given circumstance, and are they changing it wilfully? It's amzing how many people seem to make changes without thinking through the consequences!

So, generally no, I haven't had those problems outlined in the poll (though some might think me one of them ). Then again I haven't seen a paladin played for over 15 years.

I sometimes have trouble finding players I want in my games. Perhaps because of this selectivity, I don't experience the first three problems.

Nope. Mind you, while I'm a UK DM, it's only for PbP games, but I did run a PbP game with about 3 other UK players in and we never had any of the problems you mentioned.
