D&D 5E ToA: Dance of the Seven Winds *SPOILERS*

That sounds like a good plan. I'll most likely end up doing that too.

In case anyone is wondering, the reason I've been trying to hash this out is because my group hired Eku as their guide. She is currently taking them to see the naga at Orolunga, who points out that Omu is easiest to find "from the air or from the nearest high ground". Since Eku is also acquainted with the aarakocra of Kir Sabal, it makes sense to me that, upon hearing that, she would suggest to the PCs that they visit the monastery to see if the birdfolk can help. Thus the PCs, learning about the ritual, would naturally expect it to get them to Omu, not just part of the way.
Not saying you shouldn't do that, but note how you're justifying it by what you yourself made up.

In effect, you're creating high expectations and then using those to justify boosting the ritual to meet those inflated expectations.

Again, not saying your idea is bad.

Just don't fool yourself with why. ☺

PS It would be equally easy to mention the ritual in such a way as to make expectations meet what the ritual can actually do as written.

As written, the ritual is merely something that the Aaracockra brings up to help the party cover more ground.

But I guess if enough players read it as "OMG a cool way to get to Omu fast" then it doesn't matter what the writers intended, then they still fail for not preventing our expectations to exceed the actual output of the ritual...

Sorry about the necro but I was searching for this exact issue.

Thinking about this - 4mph is a ludicrously slow speed to fly. Yes, it's 'magic', but think about a brisk walk (4mph) - does anything seriously fly that slowly? The wind would blow you faster than that.

I will probably just increase the fly speed to allow them to reach Omu near the end of the third day - just short of the crater or maybe still a day away, so they still have to use the main entrance and find the clues there...maybe 8 hexes a day but then the wind mysteriously changes and the last day is slower.

Increasing duration of the charm is risky. What if they force march successfully and then fly around Omu? Call me a killjoy, but - no.

[edit] since aarakocra patrols are stated as going to Omu, I might have a couple of aara's accompany the party to guide them and keep them focused, too.

Any Speed 30 ft is like any other.

The reason fly speeds are slow is because the game handles much faster speeds poorly.

There was a reason there was once a spell called Overland Travel.

Flying faster than 4 mph is no big deal. Flying faster than 30 ft is.

Then they'll be under constant attack by the city's gargoyle guards (who attack anyone flying over the city).

EDIT: I think I just found a solution: wind walk! It's a druid spell, and Asharra's a druid, so that fits. On top of that, it gives you a flying speed of 300 ft / round, which translates to 30 mph. At that speed you can cover 240 miles in 8 hours, and it just so happens that Omu is exactly 24 hexes from Kir Sabal.

PCs are also unlikely to want to expose themselves in cloud form when they get to Omu, since it takes a whole minute to revert to normal form, during which time you're incapacitated. Most PCs would probably want to find a safe place to transform and then approach the city by foot.
