Today My Bookcase Collapsed Under the Weight of My RPGs

I just got home and measured my book shelves. They are exactly like what you'll find at this link I posted before -- though I didn't order from that site so I can't attest to its reliability.

Each bay holds approx. 22 hardback books across -- with room to set 3 books across the top in each bay if you have a ton of books like I do. So you can get roughly 100 hardback books on one of the 4-shelf units, and I picked up mine for about $70-$80 each at an Unfinished Furniture Megamart store down the street.

I'm not affiliated with Unfinished Furniture Megamart in any way; I just love these bookshelves. ;)

Meh. It's called a poor man's bookshelf. Don't know what's a 2x4x8 (only know 2x4) but you can make do with a 1/2-inch thick plywood 9 inches wide, 24 or more inches long.

Yep and I was poor back then! Well, still am. 8' refers to the length of 8 feet.

I should have typed it like this: 2"x4"x8'

thanks,
Rich

Once 4e hits, and assuming it's as good as Mouseferatu says, then a lot of shelf space will be cleared.

I have a lot of books, and although I don't have those Sauder type shelves, I do have a shelving system that would be good ... had I not been the one to put them up.

I guess it's better than losing half of my D&D books to a flash flood in the basement back in '93. :(

Which is cheaper? 2x4 or plywood?

Not sure, haven't purchased any plywood in a while. I did pick up a pine 3/4"x4"x12' board the other day for $2.65 or something like that.

I hope you're going to cut that into three or four shelves.

4 inches is not that deep.

Unless this is meant for small paperback novels, they aren't going to be of much help with your rpg book collection.

Aside from the 4-inch wide measurement, 3/4-inch is plenty thick. You can reinforce it by screwing strips of wood 1"x1" (run it lengthwise) to the bottom of each shelving.

I am a lucky, lucky man.
My grandfather was a woodworker. When I was 13, just before he passed away, he built me the most solid, impressive, massive bookcase I have ever seen.
I've had it for 24 years, and nary a buckle, a bend, nothing.
Solid oak, 6'h x 12'w x 18"d.
It's a nightmare to move, but it is literally full to the brim with books, the top is covered with books and collectibles, and it just doesn't budge. :D

I used to use the 'poor man's bookshelves' mentioned above (cinder blocks and two-by-fours), but now I use snap-together metal shelving stuff that look kinda like stacked milk crates when assembled. It holds up pretty well, despite looking flimsy as all heck.

I still have a bunch of actual milk crates as well, although they are harder to find these days and they start to warp after a few years and a few hundred pounds. Luckily I had an uncle who worked in a dairy back then, so I didn't have to steal them...
