Today My Bookcase Collapsed Under the Weight of My RPGs

you could always go the other poor man route like i did for my gaming library. i've used this method for years b/c it's easy to transport or move when you change houses or apartments. i've had friends and family members give me these things all the time over the years. put some planking in between them and they won't bend or break.

LUST @ your boxed sets, there. LUST. That's a damn fine collection.

That's an impressive collection you have there. And you're right, no need to pack them if you move. They're already packed and ready to go! Are they milk crates?

Nice. And the "no need to pack" aspect is a bonus.

Though I still have more RPGs... :) Sixty linear feet of books and boxes... :)

All depends on which shelves you buy from Ikea. Our Ivar shelves have held our library for almost ten years. Made out of solid pine, these are really good and long-lasting shelves. I really like they are modular, come in different heights, widths and lengths. You can buy pieces to wrap them around corners, store different types of media, and even install a desk within it.

I've also heard from others on this board about the strength of their Billy line of shelves.

My D&D books are all on Billy bookcases and they do seem pretty strong. They've been there for three years so far and all OK, touch wood!

I guess we've always had good luck with our shelves. (Funny story though!) Several are these excellent folding wooden bookshelves from Bed, Bath and Beyond. They don't appear to be carrying them right now, but for $40.00 we got something made from Chinese oak or elm, excellent finish, highly durable, and no collapses of any kind for three years despite tons of books and children climbing them. (Tipovers? I plead the fifth.)

Thanks, though the collection still includes another smaller shelf of about 20-25 crates or so not pictured that are scattered around the house next to the bed side, at the desk, and other spots.

@ Olaf the Stout - yea they are milk crates. back in my youth i acquired some for my gaming stuff, and ever since friends and family have given me them whenever they had some laying around. i keep thinking one day i'm going to prime and paint them all one or two colors so they don't look so junky. my g/f would appreciate it i'm sure.

@Tetsubo - mighty impressive :) i don't know i might rival you if i laid mine out that way :D

OK, here's more than you ever needed to know about wood and shelving.[SNIP]

...and THIS is why I love ENWorld. :D

I've gotten loans, fixed plumbing, made Thanksgiving Turkeys, and received great Campaign ideas from the info I've gotten from the people here!

This is pretty close to what I've got from Ikea, though mine is a 4x4 grid, not 5x5. Its from the Expedit line.
Yes, those are very good IKEA shelves. I have a small one here:

As you can see, the individual shelf spans are very short, and the shelves are supported by vertical boards. Very sturdy.

This thread has my number. I, too, use the cheap Wal-Mart bookshelves, and they're all terribly overloaded. I did learn the shelf-flipping trick long ago, but I still fear a collapse at any time. I realize I should invest in a more expensive (sturdy) bookshelf, but I keep putting it off. Now, however, I am reconsidering.
