Tolkien Elves

First Post
From what I've seen at least on some of the sites I frequent, Tolkien elves most resemble Eladrin or elves descended from Eladrin. Does anyone have any clear ideas on this? I'm just ruminating before I log off....

My best guess is that they are at least plane-touched.
Oh and does anyone know of any sites that deal with Lotr character generation?

well g'night.

Well, there's this site, which is hosted by ENWorld of all places. YMMV (that still sounds stange...) of course. Personally, I like the Decipher CODA system better for LOTR than D20, but that's just me.

As long you have the core rulebook, because Decipher is out of the RPG publishing business ... in case you haven't notice.

FWIW in my campaign elves are Aasimar that have been renamed and high elves are half-celestial Aasimar. This is mostly because I wanted to capture a tolkienesque feel for my campaign elves.

Cheers

Also, and I know this isnt d20, but someone here on the boards developed a rules lite Middle Earth system. I once had the link and it looked very faithful to the source material. If I could only remember who....

while we're on the subject, where did the idea that elves have pointy ears come from? I don't remember Tolkien ever saying they did... IIRC, they looked pretty much like people, only fairer and more noble, etc. Did Gygax invent the idea for D&D elves? Did it come from the LOTR animated movie? From the Sword of Shannara/AKA LOTR rewritten illustrations? Does this mean that elves are related to Vulcans (just kidding)?

Well in Tolkien's mythology, the elves are closest to the gods (Valar) of the mortal races (I know that elves live for ever, but they do die). However, they do come in several varieties. There are those who lived in Valinor the home of the gods, they generally seem to be far more powerful than other elves who did not reside in Valinor. In keeping with most mythologies, the first born elves also tend to be the most powerful. Then there are those who were born in middle earth and they tend to be notably less powerful than their kin from Valinor. Finally the groups of elves that had been in Middle Earth the longest generally seem to have substantially decayed in power and glory. IE, that's why there aren't any real asskickers around by the time of LotR.

If you want background, first read the Silmarilion. It is by far the best source for background on Middle Earth. Second, try tracking down some of the old ICE (Iron Crown Enterprises) Middle Earth area modules, like Angmar : Land of the Witch King. They are generally excellent source materials for the areas and characters of Middle earth in a gaming context.
