Tolkien's "The Hobbit" as a Bad D&D Game

Of course, the DM got his revenge in his next campaign. "Hey, remember that character of yours that retired and lived a life of luxury? Well, it turns out his ring was cursed and is slowly sucking the life out of him!"

DM: "As you're scrambling around in the darkness, your hand comes across something small and metallic. Feels like a ring."

Dora: "I pick it up and put it in my pocket."

Other players: "Hey, that's not fair! She probably won't even put that in the party treasure."

DM: "Shut up, you guys aren't there."

A few minutes later...

DM: "You can still hear him following you, muttering and cursing."

Dora: "I wish I'd put more ranks in Hide! Can I see a way out?"

DM: "No, it's really dark."

Dora: "Can I see in the dark?"

DM: "Not in Third Edition."

Dora: "Can the creepy guy see in the dark?"

DM: "You're not sure, but it seems like he might be able to."

Dora: "That's not fair! I thought you said he was a halfling, too!"

DM: "No, I said it *seemed* like he *might* be a halfling."

Other Player: "Maybe he's templated."

Dora: "This stinks. OK, I put on that ring I found. Maybe it'll do something good."

Other Players: "What?? Are you crazy? You don't know what it does, maybe it's cursed!"

DM: "You guys aren't there! Shut up!"

Dora: "Yeah, right...like there'd be a cursed magic ring just lying around in a cave."
