Don't know if anyone's reported on this yet, but Tom LaPille, who has been working since 2008 on Magic: the Gathering (mostly as a Developer) and has been writing the Magic site's articles on development is moving to the D&D R&D team - he mentions this in his latest column: Graveyard Shifts : Daily MTG : Magic: The Gathering

Interesting - it'll be fascinating to see what he brings to the game.

Cheers!

This is interesting and WotC seems to do this a lot. Moving people from the D&D Team to the MTG Team and vice versa.

I don't know much about MTG, but I assume balance is an important feature as it is in most competitive games and WotC is working on bringing back the miniature skirmish game (the play test rules are out), so that could be a good thing.

Aside from being very intelligent and a good communicator (my MtG experience knowing about him), I think the most telling thing is him saying that tabletop RPG is what he is most passionate about. It will be interesting to see exactly what role he takes on; the best of luck to him!

This is awesome news. I always felt the Magic design team had it together, from focus and creativity of concept all the way through to mechanical implementation and play experience. His added strengths will be welcome, and I support the mobility between properties. I mean why not utilize the full strength of the company and its members?

Guys and gals this isn't good news. Look on the site mtgsalvation for what MTG fans are saying about him. He's not very popular and for good reason.

Basically the last two years of tournament play in Magic have been incredibly :):):):):):) because of this guy. They've had to do emergency bans on Standard to fix the problems that HE created.

If anything him coming to 4E means bad things for an already ailing edition. The only interesting thing I note about this is that WotC considers D&D r&d a place to send people into exile =/

I'm impressed - Tom Lapille has been able to ruin Magic tournaments by writing a column and participating in development work. Wow... he wasn't even Lead Developer for any set except for M12. Let's ignore the work of his boss, Aaron Forsythe...

Mark Rosewater is the Head of Magic Design. Tom Lapille was not the Head of Magic Development - he just wrote the column about development. (It doesn't look like there is a Head of Magic Development, in fact).

Who was lead developer for Worldwake, from which both Stoneforge and Jace, Mind Sculptor originated? Oh wait, that was Mike Turian. Not Tom Lapille.

But let us not get the facts in the way of your little rant...
