Tome of Horrors 3.5e, not bad

I normally have this "If it's not from WotC, it's not in my games" attitude, but lately I've been allowing only a few 3rd party products at my table...with strict reviews, of course!

So I am looking through my first purchase of a 3rd party d20 book, Tome of Horrors 3.5, and I have to say it's pretty damn good. I got it only because of the many 1E/2E creatures updated to 3.5e that I can use until WotC comes out with a more official version to replace it with. I mainly got it, because, I too cannot sit and wait for a particular creature to be converted. Might as well take it from here until then, right?

One thing I have to point out that's got me chuckling badly. The fact that quite a number of these creatures are already converted by WotC. What makes it funny is this quote in the book:

You won’t find any of the monsters in Tome of Horrors in any other official Wizards of the Coast product!

We worked directly with Wizards of the Coast to make sure that no monster in this book (well, only a handful) would be included in a later Wizards of the Coast product. So, you can
rest assured that the contents of this book will not be superceded by any later “offi cial” book.

Going through the list, more than a handful of monsters were converted already and WotC hasn't stopped. I find it, also, rather absurd that the writers of this book made sure WotC won't officially produce these creatures in their books. It's their monsters, they can do whatever they want and whenever. Apparently, they already did, since (like I've said before) numerous creatures in that book have already appeared in the pages of WotC products since ToH's first release and in the pages of Dragon and Dungeon Magazine.

Still, this book is a good "Use these in the meantime until WotC gets around to them" type book and I'll be making good use of it.

IIRC when Scott, Erica, Boz, et al started working on this ... that was the understanding. I still prefer the ToH version of many critters rather than WotC. Orogs, Ogrillan, and Half-ogres are very well done. The Dragonnel is perfect, and 1000% (one thousand!) better than the drivel that was in the Draconomicon.

bah! I'm just a ToH fanboy (and happened to be online when they were putting it together)

it's a nice conversion book, well recommended.

ps. most of it is online too!

Are we Talking Print or PDF.

I have the 3.0 Tome in Hardback.

I thought they were not going to release the 3.5 as a Hardcover; Electronic Only.

Did they change their minds?

Or are talking about the PDF.

I'd pick up the Print Copy if it existed

It is .pdf only at present.

Agreed. ToH versions beat WOTC versions any day. I absolutely love the overall feel of the book and think Necromancer did a fantastic job with it.

Tome of Horrors (3.5) is really my default Monster Manual; I don't even own a hardcopy MM1 (using srd when necessary). Love it!

Some of the ToH versions are much better than subsequent WotC versions. Some... aren't, though it's still a good enough book that I won't shelve it when/if WotC comes out with conversions for all of the monsters (something I really doubt will happen). I don't use ToH that much mainly because I think most of the monsters are lame, but I'm still glad I supported it.

ToH 2 and 3 are much better, IMO, mainly because the Necro crew really gets to stretch their creativity without being hampered by conversion issues.

Skimming through this, I noticed that, too. I got it mainly for the conversions of some creatures I'd like to use, like kilmoullis, leprachauns, quicklings, Slaad Lords, Dukes of Hell, and many others not yet converted by WotC. The conversions are awesome, that's for sure, and I can honestly say this is the best non-WotC d20 book I now own.

Prior to this, I did use material from "Dragons" by AEG (a friend of mine bought it for a prestige class he wanted to use from it), bought Rokugan d20 setting (bad move), and a couple of Ravenloft d20s (even worse). I did get "Arms&Armor" by Bastion Press and their 3.5 conversion, got a little use from those.

But ToH beats them all :D

The things I really appreciate most about ToH 3.5 is that they went to the trouble to create venomous snake variants and that they provided the ability for a DM to make *any* animal a dire animal.
