That's terrific!

You are giving your son a great gift. In the future, he might not remember the actual game, but he will certainly appreciate the quality time spent with you :)

Yeah awesome, my 7 and 6 yr old boys love playing the DnD board games with me. I think I may run the Pf Beginners Box next, they love the shiny! I was going to run gamma world with them but I forgot it still has opportunity actions etc.

But I may drag out my copy of the RC and run that, mmmm

I found that Basic -- especially using the Mentzer solo adventure -- is a great teaching tool AND it is simple and streamlined enough to have an 8 year old "get it." I think the PF Beginner Box -- which I adore and think is a highly necessary product -- is a little tough for my son at 8, but is probably good for 10 year olds. Granted, my son isn't a great reader, so my perspective might be skewed.

And, to be honest, I taught him to play not only with the same set I learned with, but the same physical copy (a few years ago, my mother dropped off a box of stuff from the basement that included old Dragon Mags and that book).

Yep, it's a positively fantastic experience. I introduced my 10-year-old son, (and several of his friends), to D&D this year, and he loved it and is often asking to play again. Just like you, I used the 1981 BD&D box set. It was a real blast.

Be prepared to be amazed, yourself.

Success! We had a great time, he behaved (4 hours is a long game for an 8 year old) and, best of all, his 1 hp thief not only survived but stole the show as Archer of the Year.

I think you are right, I have got the PDF of the box set for a look and it is a little tricky. Both my big boys are exceptional readers but I think the rules are a little dense in the PfBBox. I have the RC (and also heaps of other rules lite rules) but yeah, I started with the best mates big bro on the red box (my best mates oldest son now has that box and some of our PC sheets!). So I think I will start on BECMI- nostalgia and fun.
Can't wait til the next 2 boys in line are old enough, single handedly increasing the hobby fan base there ;)

EDIT: 1 HP thief? OUCH but well done
