Dragonborn were banned from the moment I saw them, although, a player has managed to nag himself into playing one. We'll see, though. IF he does play one, it will be interesting to see how the locals (not to mention the other members of the party, who agree with me) react to this weird, scaly creature on two legs. Otherwise, everything out of the PHB is up for grabs.

I didn't realize the thread was about classes too. I don't like what I've seen of some classes so far, but touching them without having seen them in play long enough is a lot trickier than races. And banning classes when there are so few in the PHB seems a little harsh.
But I will definitely tweak them at some point and replace some of them if good 3rd party alternatives come out.

The first to go will be the heaviest on marks (if marks turn out to be as unwieldy as they look) and nonsensical mechanics like the "successful hit = completely unrelated effect" routine. If they're all like that, then that won't be a problem anymore :\

Well there are Bugbear, Hobgoblin, and Orcs that could work and are in the MM.
Bugbear borders on furry and aren't they all medium (I'm not sure it means anything in 4e though)? But yes, the crunch may fit.

I think that I will use all the crunch as is, at least at first. I will change all the fluff though. All races will be humans. The races in the PHB just reflect different natural abilities of each of the characters. Dragonborn might have a mystical heritage or fate, but they look human. Same with eladrin. If you want to play a short character, go for it. You can add the dwarf race or the halfling race, and this doesn't add any significant fluff. You could have easily played a short dragonborn or human.

Classes will be handled in the same sort of way. Character concept independant of class. Class just gets you a set of abilities to choose from.

Campaign wise I will probably play an undead and aberration heavy game, so I might just refluff a lot of the mosters as well. We shall see.

I'd be reluctant to ban any of the classes but races are fair game. It'll depend on the campaign setting I'm going to use. Should I decide to give Eberron a try, I'll allow all races that are mentioned as playable races in the new campaign setting.

I'm running a nine game 'core rules only' campaign, jumping the PCs several levels each time and letting us experience the rules from low to high levels very quickly. Then I'll go back and start a real campaign from first level. I'll definitely be adding races from the MM; they're wonderfully balanced, and very elegantly done.

My 3e campaign was building on my long established 1e world, so I made quite a few changes to fit the flavour of that world.

For 4e I'm going to be starting a brand new campaign world, and I think for a change I'll be staying straight core with a couple of exceptions (I'm going to do something about the Eladrins 1st level teleport power, there may be a couple of other tweaks).

Core, straight up. (....with the inevitable supplements, obviously.)

Why monkey with new rules? I've not yet played them!

Pretty much this (except the eladrin, which also won't change).

I anticpate allowing some stuff from PHBII and MM (if there is demand), but probably will become more conservative after that.
