I seem to interpret "iconic" differently. To me, these are the humanoids that help make D&D D&D, not another generic Tolkien-derived fantasy:

mind flayers
drow
trolls
kobolds
githyanki

gnolls
liches
yuan ti
bugbears
sahuagin

D&D just never did enough to differentiate orcs, for instance, to make them stand out from the bog-standard fantasy version.

Well, if you think that's exciting...

This just in!

Combined RPG.net and ENworld results!

Kobolds steal 2nd place from Goblins. Trolls come storming back into the Top 10, rivals Bugbears back to the Top 20. Ogres retake 4th from Gnolls, who fall to 5th. The undead make a much stronger showing in the Top 20.

1. Orcs
2. Goblins
3. Hobgoblins
4. Gnolls
5. Ogres
6. Frost Giants
7. Wights
8. Kobolds
9. Sahuagin
10. Bugbears

A pretty standard list. I just like my wild, bloodthirsty, yet at times surprsingly honourable, warrior tribes.
