Top 100 RPing mistakes?

Probably been said before but I'll throw some stuff in the mix.....

Try to be somewhat original......

That can be hard with all the novels, short stories, poems, ballads and everything else floating around. When you see a cool character in a book don't immediately make a character exactly like him/her using their life word for word and only changing the name. Vice versa don't snatch up some famous character's name and slap it on your backstory. Not every single ranger has to use a long bow, long sword, short sword and dagger you know things like that. Spice up your character by adding new twists such as maybe doing a ranger that uses axes(greataxe, battle axe, hand axe, throwing axe). The little touches can make a character unique and set them apart.

Don't force your way into storylines......

By forcing I mean constantly trying to get involved with the same story line over and over when it is clear that either you aren't wanted or that there isn't room for another player. Ask the players involved if they have room for another character or if it happens to be an open storyline that anyone can jump into. Forcing your way into situations leaves a bad taste in the other player's mouths that they won't soon forget and most likely will cost you future enjoyment. If at anytime you are told that they don't want your characters simply because you play them then leave them alone and find greener pastures.

Don't be quick to abandon a character......

Sometimes it takes a long time to get your character involved in storylines or plots going on. This is especially true if you don't know anyone on the site. I've known several players that it took them several months of roleplaying before anyone would take notice of them. When people did take notice they became quite popular with many people wanting them involved somehow with their characters, storylines or plots.

Don't take IC actions as a slight to you OOC.....

Just because a character happens to be slamming or making fun of your character doesn't mean that the player is slamming or making fun of you OOC. I've had players ask me if I was mad at them because Fen or Rayl would rip their character a new one anytime they saw the character(s). Fen and Rayl are asses pure and simple, mirrors of one another in their thinking. When they would verbally insult some character didn't mean I had a problem with the player. If you find yourself thinking maybe the character's actions are being aimed at you OOC send the player a pm to clarify. Yeah I know if you do that then they might make fun of you for taking things too seriously. Wouldn't you rather have that than blow up over some imagined wrong then look like a total ass?

Don't pull "game" statistics......

Just because you are playing a D&D 3.5 Edition character doesn't mean that the other person even has a clue as to what you are talking about. It doesn't matter what game system or any that your character is based off of. There are no mechanics to worry about or what have you. If someone can think of it their character can do it no matter how obsurd you might find it.

Never argue with a WizO or other admin so the whole room can see......

What ever your grievance might be, whether real or imagined, it is between you and the WizO. Even if you are in the right with your thinking you only hurt your case by arguing for all to see. That can be considered room disruption and might possibly get your character banned.

Familiarize yourself with the code of conduct of this site and freedom of destiny.....

The rules are on the sign in page. Everything is pretty much common sense but none the less you should make sure you know the code of conduct to ensure that you don't break any rules or infringe on a character's freedom of destiny while trying to roleplay.

Steer clear of all powerful beings......

No one wants to roleplay with someone that has to play characters that know everything there is to know about everything, the greatest battle master to ever live, archmage extraordinare, the highest of high priests(living or dead) in service to Ramalamadingdong and the best woodsman this side of Baator all rolled into one. Even the most seasoned of adventurers are going to be strong in some areas while very weak in others. For example, the ranger that has never stepped foot out of his little area of woods, never having any contact with other humanoids is going to be sorely outmatched by someone that duels for a living. A character's weaknesses are just as important as his strengths sometimes even more so.

Avoid bandwagon characters.......

When you see a person playing something unique don't immediately make a character very similiar to their's. Some say that imitation is the best form of flattery but in this case it is rude to say the least. The people here for the most part work hard on their ideas. When you get several players playing the exact same thing it diminishes the creator's idea greatly and usually they give up playing that character because you have ruined what they envisioned with a poor imitation in their minds. Most of the site vets can give examples of this like tieflings, devils, demons, celestials, vampires, drow or many other types. A couple of these hit home for me but I won't get into that.

Don't be afraid to ask questions or take advice from other players....

Just because you might have been playing tabletop RPG's from the time you could read and write doesn't mean you know how to roleplay online. There are no dice to roll for interactions, no dm to moderate exactly how a scene plays out. Most players that have spent some time here have some good advice to offer you to ease you into this new world of roleplaying. Even the guy that has only been roleplaying online for a few weeks has probably picked up a "secret" or two that might help you along. Remember the ones that have been here for a long time are here for a couple of reasons A)they enjoy it and B) they know how to roleplay in an online environment. Don't simply toss out their advice because it might go against something you think should be the way roleplaying is done.

ummm how the hell did my post get so long?!?!?! I blame the other Jason he must have typed alot when I refilled my glass of tea.

Thinking that having spent more time with the site, somehow makes what you say, think and do (be it IC or OOC) more legitimate.

Too often, I find supposed 'veterans' threaten to congest my brain when they hold a longer record with the site over the heads of newbies and others with whom they disagree or are having trouble getting along with, whether it be IC or OOC. Also, a few I'm sure, just like feeling more important that way.

Time spent on site, does little to balance an equation, when placed across from merit.

Just to add to this a bit..
Also keep in mind that just because the "character" is new, it doesn't mean the "player" is new to the site. So we shouldn't assume that just because we don't recognize the character name that we are more .. hmm..... adept at role playing than the "new name" in the room.
Not to sound like your Mom, but... best advise is to keep the golden rule in mind... Do treat others the way you'd like them to treat you.
