Top 15 Languages of all time

LordBOB

First Post
The name says it all folks, What are your top 15 (or more or less) favorite languages of all time?

I ask because im about to play in a level 40 campaign ( mostly just a DnD fight club) and my Barbarian has an Intelligence score of 60 (+25 mod). Yes you may make jokes. Dont ask how or why i did it just laugh for a minute before continuing.

The languages arent really going to make a difference, but i plan on keeping this character for a LONG time and i need some flavor to him.

So what languages to you suggest i should pick up?

Thanks in advance!

Go for the obscure stuff! Sure, you'll need Undercommon, Abyssal, Celestial and Infernal, the four elemental languages... but Khen-Zai? The secret tongue of the yugoloths? Drow Sign? If your campaign world has an in-depth history with languages to match, take some of those. Sure, you'll probably never need Old Oerdian, but won't you feel special when you meet up with that two-thousand year old sect of druids?

Demiurge out.

Seeing as there are 20 languages listed in the PHB, it's shorter to make a list of languages your character doesn't speak. Leave out Druidic (you can't learn it unless you take levels in druid anyway), Elven, Gnome, Halfling, and Gnoll. While it might seem strange to know all of the outsider-type languages but few of the material planar ones, most of the people who speak those speak common too. And who really wants to talk to elves anyway? :p

Alternatively, leave out Druidic and all of the elemental languages (I've rarely seen them come up). or Druidic, three of the elemental languages, and Elven.

If you weren't counting Common (and the other racial language if your barbarian isn't human) in the 15, then you can add one (or two) back in.

Or since you have a ton of skill points, blow a few on Speak Language and you can speak everything except Druidic.

Just for fun, even though you have a ton of skill points, DON'T spend the two points on learning to read. It'll be funny.

Ancient Modron. Good to curse in. "FATAL EXCEPTION 3-0-5! THAT CRITTER SURE IS BIG!"

Klatschian. Very musical language. You can insult people and they're all pleased about it.

Thieves' Cant / Thieves' Sign, If you can learn it. Always good to know that the little boy there didn't just wave at the rider with the expensive-looking armour....

My personal favorite:

-Generic Badly Affected Fantasy European Accent

You never know when the DM will attempt to give his NPC a little more flair and bust out an affected imitation worthy of a thrown beerstein.

DM: You guys come across a market place.

You: Hmm...I'm gonna find a weapons dealer.

DM: "HALLO THAR! Woold 'e loik tah per youse meh warez, youngin'?"

You: ...can I roll a Speak Languages check to figure out what the hell just happened?
