Top 3 positive 4E changes-Forked Thread: ...specific changes 4e needs in your opinion

Hmm...

-The ease of DMing/Setting up The Game (I view the Monster System as part of this as well)

-The Balance of the Characters and openness of this balanced rules (it is quite easy to understand the rules).

-Cinematic flare to combat and non-combat (chases actually work really well in D&D now!)

1. Simplification of Monster Design.

2. Change in Saving throws to Static Defenses.

3. Condensing and simplifying the skill system.

I'm more of a 3.x fan, but 4e has indeed some positive qualities, and some of them are great.

1 - Fixed leveling. In 4e each level gained means something (no dead levels), and there's not too much difference between levels, so the characters can still face more or less the same threats (there's no need to remove orcs from the game and replace them with gnolls just because the party reached 4th level).

2 - Rituals and Artifacts. I love the rules for both (although I'd have loved it if the actual rituals and artifacts were up to the expectations), and I plan to steal them for my 3.x games.

3 - Layout. 4e books are the prettiest and more organized game books I've ever seen. It's very easy to find whatever you're looking for in a matter of seconds, and the art is very well placed.

1. Points of Light limiting the scope of settings.
2. Siloing skills off for removal.
3. Simplification of DMing.

EDIT: Honourable Mention: Going back to old school monster design.

#1: The Maths. Making the swinginess at either end of the level curve a thing of the past is a Good Thing.

#2: The Tiers. Spelling out when your character is supposed to do certain things, be certain things, and represent certain things, is a huge aid in figuring out what kind of adventures you should be having.

#3: No more Iterative Attacks. Huzzah!

I'd go with:

1) monster generation (which mostly subsumes the reduction of DM prep time)
2) the new less swingy mathematical model, generally
3) the ironing out of the tiers of power

as the things that most strongly appeal to me about the new edition. The first one especially is a very powerful beckon.

I think I can... I think I can...

This is a GREAT thread to see...

Lovely to see some positivity...

As I wrote in another thread... the guy DMing my group at the moment has just anounced he is buying up on 4E... and I had a wave of panic. I have read sooooo much negative stuff about it! Was feeling a little freaky...

...

I guess we shall see...

Thanks for the posters!

1) Addition of at-will versus encounter powers. No longer does the wizard have to spend low level games rolling to attack with a crossbow. They get to act wizardly.

2) Simplification of monsters and their stat blocks.

3) Overall speed of play and ease of preparation.
