Total Defense and Tumble

The Total Defense standard action gives you +4 AC for a round which included a move. So, for example, you can move your base speed while using Total Defense, thereby getting +4 AC against attack of opportunity and other attacks. Not always the best option, but it can be nice if combined with mobility and 5 ranks in tumble, giving +10 AC for a single move action of your base speed.

My question is whether the 'move' part of Total Defense can include a tumble? So if you succeed at the tumble, you avoid the AoO, but if you fail, you still get that +10 AC from Total Defense and Mobility.

Yes.

To use Tumble you just need a move action at half speed.
Total Defense grants you an AC bonus at the cost of giving up your standard action.

So when using Total Defense you can definitely use your move action to move at half speed and tumble.

There isn't a 'move part of Total Defense'.

Total Defense is a standard action. You could also, in the same round, make a Move action. If you use it to move, then like any other regular move, you can tumble to avoid AoOs.

And yes, if you incur an AoO anyway, you'd get +10 to your AC.

+10???? I thought +6?

The +6 is instead the +4 or do I understand something wrong here?

Edit: Duuuuh. Mobility. Duh.

Special: If you have 5 or more ranks in Tumble, you gain a +3 dodge bonus to AC when fighting defensively instead of the usual +2 dodge bonus to AC.
If you have 5 or more ranks in Tumble, you gain a +6 dodge bonus to AC when executing the total defense standard action instead of the usual +4 dodge bonus to AC.

Yes, but the +6 AC (for 5 ranks in tumble) still counts while executing the move, so it's kinda a full-round action defense/move combination. ;)

Mmm... the bonus actually counts until your next turn, but you shouldn't think too much, you are just "using up" your standard action in this turn.

Tumble is such a great skill it should be stamped "Mandatory" for all fighter-types, except those cursed archers, and even then....

You betcha!!! My PbEM elven Fighter7/Paladin4 has 6 cross-class ranks in Tumble and the Whirlwind Attack feat chain (and Wpn Spec (longsword)) and I've never regretted a single one of those 12 skill points when I'm Fighting Defensively with Combat Expertise. Mind you, I did have a 14 Int to start with, so skill points aren't as scarce as they could have been.

Fighter-types? I almost always play spellcasters and more than half had at least a few ranks in Tumble! ;)
