Toughness - How many hit points to make it worthwhile?

This is good. I like this. Three hit points up front is noticeable. :)
 

+X and +1 Fort Save Bonus

Would a benefit of +3 HP, +1 Fort Save Bonus be more palatable?

The benefit has to be less than +2 Fort Save Bonus and has
to be less than +1 HP / Level, as that is provided by existing
feats, and those are both viewed as high value feats.

The problem that I have with Toughness is how badly it
scales with increased levels. Even at first level, any
character that I played that had a +2 Base Fort save bonus
would take Improved Toughness over Toughness. Always.
That tells me that either Toughness is too weak (seems to be)
or that Improved Toughness is too strong (perhaps).

How about:

Toughness (General)

Benefit: When you take this feat, you get another die of hit points. The die type is the same as the die of the class your current level came from. For example, if you take this feat as a 1st-level wizard, you gain 1d4 hit points. If you take this feat as a 3rd-level barbarian, you gain 1d12 hit points.
Special: If you lose this feat by whatever means (like being drained), you lose the additional Hit Die.
 

This just makes it a more uniformly attractive through different classes, but it's still way better at low levels than at high levels.

And I can imagine few things that would suck more than rolling a 1 on your Toughness die!

Hm... how about if it was another HD for the purposes of hp, complete with Con bonus? That way it scales at least a bit with levels, since almost everyone increases their Con.
 


I haven't found any good reason to take Toughness but wanted something like it in my campaign, so I created Hardiness (+1 HP per new level) and Greater Hardiness (+1 HP per new level, stacks with Hardiness).
Only had one character take Hardiness and now he has 10 HP more than he would without it.
Works for me.
 

I house ruled toughness to turn into improved toughness (+1 hp/level) at 4th level. A good boost at 1st and useful at higher levels.
