TPK strategies?

Some great ideas so far.

The characters in my campaign are "unknowns" at this point, facing small-scale rather than world-shaking threats. (We're playing Scales of War, currently on Siege of Bordrin's Watch.) Most of the suggestions thus far have been more epic in nature. Any ideas for grittier, more "realistic" scenarios?

The other thing I'm facing is that I'm a new DM and I don't have the experience or energy to make up a campaign of my own. I'm okay taking them down a side branch and making up/revising a few encounters, but I'm going to want to get them back on the rails sooner rather than later. (No flames about railroading or advice on improvising, please!)

Any ideas on the scale of "you get taken prisoner," but more interesting and varied? I'm okay with the TPK turning out to be subdual rather than death.
