Trade in value for gems?

If a player has a gem worth 1,000 gp, what should be the coin trade in value on that?

I keep it simple in my campaign. A 1000gp gem will get the seller 1000gp.

The PHB answer is that gems are simply expensive trade goods, like grain or cattle. Basic trade goods are not subject to the 50% rule, and trade at face value like currency (assuming value is agreed upon, but the same thing applies to all trade goods).
