No, he didn't. At least not in the original series (I own the first 20 or issues). Shockwave was 2nd to Megatron and, like the more conniving Starscream, coveted Megatron's status as leader of the Decepticons. For a while, he controlled the Decepticons after taking down the (weakened) Autobots (Transformers 4) and defeating (a still injured) Megatron in single combat (I think that was Transformers 6 or 7).

Ah, right. I was rembering the time when Megatron went loony after Optimus' death and blew himself up. By then Shockwave was heading the Decepticon/Cobra alliance.
