Trap the Soul spell question

Assuming the victim's SR is overcome and they fail their save, are they basically helpless when their soul is entrapped? I would think so since it is a Level 8 spell - so, I assume the victim cannot plane shift or teleport out?

here is the text from the SRD:
Trap the soul forces a creature’s life force (and its material body) into a gem. The gem holds the trapped entity indefinitely or until the gem is broken and the life force is released, which allows the material body to reform.

That is correct. One's life force cannot cast spells. I've been in a gem before. Most of the time you just have to wait until the end of the combat to break open the gem unless the baddie took off.

So, it's not so much that the soul can't leave, but that it doesn't want to?

Well its like being in the waiting room of a doctor's office. They have some maganizes, the nicer ones have a TV going or soft music in the back ground. All in all, its not a bad place to be, but you'd rather be someplace else. =v)
