Travelling Light to games

Thread Resurrection!

Okay, with the 4E books out, no PDFs for purchase, and no free SRD, I expect the weight of my gaming gear is going to go up. I normally travel with a mini-laptop, the PHB (because it's referenced more than the DMG or MM), minis, dice, and a flip-map.

The weight stays about the same if I'm playing, since the 4E PHB has everything a player needs...for now. But I plan to play LFR, and I expect I'll need the Forgotten Realms book as well. Furthermore, if I judge, I need to add in the 4E DMG and MM. Right now I can travel with just a laptop bag, but I may need to move to a full backpack or even one of the wheeled bags.

Anyone else in the same boat due to 4E? Any news on purchasable PDFs of the books?

I just stick everything in my laptop. Perhaps I'm alone in this, but I have no qualms about downloading a .pdf if I already legally own the physical book. It's not like I'm sharing the .pdf with other people.

No. As I recall Kenzer's agreement with WotC disallowed any PDF versions of their licensed products.
Also, a PDF would kind of miss the point in that the Shield has lots and lots of pages that you can flip between. It's almost like a book in that regard.

If I may make a suggestion: don't carry less-- carry smarter.

Staples has this awesome wheeled crate. Imagine if someone took a milk crate and a rolling suitcase with extending handle, bred them, and gave the glorious mutant offspring the ability to fold to a very compact size for storage, and you've got it. The thing is absolutely awesome. I've been using one for over a year to take board games to and from my college's game club, and used it for D&D as well before my group collapsed.

Right now the venue is a summertime-abandoned cafeteria at the nearby university campus, and most of my players all come straight from work (Wednesday night game).

Several of my group's players bring laptops to our sessions, whether they're coming from work or home. We have most of the source material on PDF and I'd be happy to share if that eases your burden.

As to books, miniatures, gaming mats, etc., I would suggest assigning specific items that each player needs to bring so you (or someone else) isn't saddled with bringing nearly everything each session.
