With this week's Legends and Lore article suggesting many monsters will receive additional story or setting descriptions to go along with their mechanical designs, I was wondering how people prefer their Monster Manuals and Treasure Horde books created.
I believe many of these works originally were a mix of pre-published content and new content. The interesting thing about using pre-published content is that it already has pages and pages of connections to a setting and adventure. This means a paragraph or two about culture, history, personality, and so on in a Monster Manual or Treasure Horde can't really compare. If you want to really know how Kuo-Toa behave pick up D1-2 "Descent Into the Depths of the Earth". If you want to know how Baba Yaga's Hut works pick up "The Dancing Hut of Baba Yaga". Or perhaps a campaign setting like Greyhawk to learn the history the Hand and Eye of Vecna and who this Vecna person was anyways.
