Generally, yes, it might be a waste to lug around all that gold.
But my WLD group plays WLD for fun. Since it's "just" a big dungeon crawl, our DM does a few odd things--like letting us burn 100 gp in treasure (coin or gems only) to use Identify (instead of specifically requiring a 100 gp pearl). We don't even have a wizard, just a rogue with maxed UMD, so it's hard enough as it is.
Oh, and if you follow Mark's suggestion, be sure to record their deaths in my "World's Largest Graveyard" thread (link in my .sig).
