D&D 5E Trickster Rogue with Familiar doing sneak attack damage

"However, if the familiar is granting sneak attack, you can bet that it will be considered a priority target, particularly by ranged attackers (if using flyby)."

If the orc I'm stabbing in the face wants to ignore me and burn both his action and reaction to swing at my owl, I'm all for it.

I don't see what the problem would be. The rogue is supposed to get sneak attack damage every round, even if they have to jump through some hoops to do so. It's not supposed to be a rare occurrence.

That's fair, but odds are that the orc will kill the familiar. If you summoned it using a scroll then, unless the DM allows you to buy scrolls of Find Familiar or the Wizard is willing to spend time and money scribing them for you, your familiar is gone for good. On the other hand, if you take Find Familiar as your 8th level spell, you can simply resummon it as a ritual.

I know this is an older thread, but I think the Arcane Trickster could take Find Familiar or any other wizard spell at third level - it only says (s)he has to pick two spells from Enchantment or Illusion spells (page 98 PHB):

Spells Known of 1st-Level and Higher. You know
three 1st-level wizard spells of your choice, two of which
you must choose from the enchantment and illusion
spells on the wizard spell list.

Thanks for digging up the rule. As I was reading along the thread, I could not remember it and am away from my books.

I think the issue here is that the OP wanted to use the third spell for something like Magic Missile, and then still have the benefit of a familiar through using a scroll.

This would allow the OP to have a spell cast (hopefully) more often than Find Familiar while still having the familiar.

As the others posted though, the risk would be if the familiar died the OP would have to wait until another scroll of FF was available to get back the familiar.
