Tricky Owlbear Publishing, Inc. is pleased to bring you the 38th issue of the Behind the Spells series: Sanctuary. This series examines those spells from the SRD that are listed time and again on character sheets throughout gaming. These are the spells which, if on your PC's class list, will be taken as soon as possible and include such quintessential favorites as magic missile and fireball.

Each pdf in this series examines the spellcaster who created the spell, one or more of the spell's hidden capabilities, and variant ideas that the spell has inspired throughout history (spells, items, etc.). This release includes two spell secrets and two new magic items: Safebox and Sanctuary Marker!

Thought this series was dead..nice to see it come alive again :)

I suppose it was, for a short time, after Phil (Ronin Arts) and I decided to stop producing it in the middle of '07. But after I started up Tricky Owlbear, I knew that I had to continue writing the secret origins of our favorite spells. An already established series seemed like a no-brainer to give the new company. :) We've put out this release as well as Vampiric Touch so far. Not the same rapid output as before but still going.

I wonder if more people thought as you did, Vascant, as this release has greatly spurred the sales of previous BtS titles (as it ideally should). As always, were listening for suggestions for future issues. I doubt The Walls, for example, would have been written yet without the requests for it.

Perhaps yes also as I posted just a few minutes ago, I have noticed an unusual surge of sales since the Paizo decision to stay 3.5e

Personal Spells I would love to see expanded upon:
Fabricate
Permanency
Globe of Invulnerability
Major Creation
Major Jar

Just a few off the top of my head...

Good stuff Napftor!

Here are some spells I'd like to see some details on:
Create Food & Water/Create Water/Purify Food & Drink
Magnificent Mansion
Magic Jar
Permanency
Quench

Thanks, Reveille!

I've started a list of spells mentioned here and elsewhere. Out of curiosity, are your choices based on wanting to see what histories I come up with or are you interested more in the variant mechanics/related items and spells?

Can I say both? I guess you would have to understand the campaigns I run to understand, in my world spells are never simply given out blindly and even the spells PC can select based on level advancement are merely from a list a common spells for that region. So the search for new spells is always a point of interest for spell casters in my game. In most cases I have been able to take your history (sometimes with editing) and plug it into historic events to clues for the players to follow. (This means I have to make up less, which means less work.. win win)

As for new mechanics, variants, items and such often allows me to expand just a single boring spell. Giving way for regional changes and such or perhaps something one guild can offer to members of good standing.

Both. I completely plan on plundering and altering all info to suit my homebrew. ;)
