Trinity Blood: any good?

The series isn't bad, just average. I enjoyed watching it on TV, but I wouldn't pay for it or watch the reruns.

And, I may be in the minority, but I liked it better than Trigun, mainly because Trigun did something many other anime do that annoys me; it was a goofy comedy before switching gears and becoming serious for the final episodes when they (finally) introduce the main villain. Trinity Blood's hero may have had goofy moments, but you at least felt like the series was going somewhere.

Trinity Blood is actually based on a series of Japanese novels. The anime series is short, only about 24 episodes and they basically skimmed the most interesting subplots of the novels without getting heavily into a lot of the backstory.

They don't even really discuss Abel's backstory at all until the last few episodes. And they leave a lot out only offering hints of things that were heavily dealt with in the novels.

For example, Abel is pretty much immortal and is a reformed villain who once ruled over a bloody and brutal empire. Caterina Sforza, I believe gets exiled from the Vatican after her uncle takes over and she becomes somewhat of an anti-hero who even joins the Order of Rosenkreuz. The Order of Rosenkruez is pretty much portrayed as diabolic villains in the anime, but are less straight evil in the novels where they are basically anarchists out to bring down the existing social structures.

In the anime she pretty much stays pure and in power and the storyline with her uncle ends differently.

You should try the Trigun manga. It is very, very different from what I know about the anime, and a lot better. After all, the anime was produced when Trigun was at most 1/4 complete. At the very least, the manga version is a lot more consistent and complete than what you are describing.

I have to agree that Trigun pushed the comedy factor a little too hard. I liked the episodes with Trigun and his brother. The rest of the series made little sense, with Stampede having this reputation as a mass murderer when he avoided killing at every step. And when folks meet him, they treat him like he's a buffoon even after he's shown what a badass he is.

Fullmetal Alchemist had a pretty damn near perfect balance of humor and drama. Inuyasha was a fun spectacle, though I actually got tired of it eventually since it just seemed to have outlived its day in the sun (though not to the degree Dragonball has).

Enjoyed Basilisk, thought Ghost in the Shell moved a little too slow, Samurai 7 was very dull, and I gotta say I never had any idea what the hell was going on with Witch-Hunter Robin.

Any other recommendations in the Anime department?

I'm really enjoying Bleach and Blood Plus seems pretty good from what little I've seen. Lupin The 3rd had 2 boxsets of movies (5 each)released. They're a lot of fun, but skip Secret Of The Twilight Gemini, which is just terrible.

And I love the designs and concept of One Piece, but the awful rewritting (and dumbing down) in the US version makes it unwatchable. I've heard reports that the Japanese producers were very unhappy with the adaption, and it's now being reported that 4Kids has stopped work on the series. 4Kids still holds the rights until, I think, 2009, so no one else can redo it until then.

Reading in Wikipedia about the show, it sounds a lot better than what I've actually seen on TV, so I suspect you're right.

It's funny how many hang-ups Americans have. You can't even acknowledge the existence of smoking in a show aimed at kids, so many of the scenes had to be touched to replace cigarettes with lollipops.

And the voices...those stupid, stupide voices.

Supposedly, even the dub actors admit they dont resemble the originals all that much. Take that as you will. I'm not a member of the 'They must sound as close as possible' clique when it comes to dubs, but they ARE horrible for their roles. And the graphical edits. So, so painful.
