Trip Fighters -- do they work?

I have been using trip attacks extensively in both 3.0 and Modern. They're great, in my opinion. Really nasty on rooftops *grin* I have had characters use the spiked chain, whips, whip daggers, etc...and in the end, they are all fairly good. You'd be surprised h ow many opponents tend to surrender when you disarm them and then knock them on their backside.

Don't waste too many resources on trip attacks... You should still be able to counter a grapple.

The last trip fighter in my group got nearly drowned by an Improved Grab critter :D

In higher levels you'll probably end up a little bit disappointed, everyone will be able to get around your AoOs easily. Feats like Hold the line would change that... but you'll never have enough feats :D
