Tripping – do you actually NEED improved trip

What about using spiked chain? How do you provoke an AoO when using a weapon with reach? (unless they also have reach, of course)
You don't. That would be covered under the section for "if you are tripping with a weapon."

You don't provoke an AoO when tripping with a weapon, reach or no reach. Only if you're tripping with an unarmed strike and don't have IUS or IT does a trip attack provoke.

SHEESH guys and gals, just LOOK at the rules (post number 5).

This one is a no brainer, it's very, very clear from the rules.

The AoO is NOT from the tripping, it's from attacking unarmed.

Trip with Improved Unarmed Strike, a tripping weapon (with or wihout reach) or Improved Trip and avoid the AoO. Simple as that.

There should be no question about this one.

<sticks hand in the air> But an unarmed strike is not an unarmed melee touch attack, so IUS may not overcome the AOO issue when attempting to trip unarmed.

There is nothing in the description of the IUS fet, themonk's unarmed strike class ability, the Improved Trip feat, or the trip action that clearly allows someone with IUS to negate the AOO, except by taken Improved Trip (which monks get as a bonus at 6th level).

True, but an unarmed melee touch attack is an attack made while unarmed, the regular AoO of which is negated by IUS. So, yes, Improved Unarmed Strike does avoid the the attack of opportunity invoked by initiating a trip attack.

Squares and rectangles, my friend. ;)

Yes, there is.

Improved Unarmed Strike does not prevent an AoO provoked by attacking with an unarmed strike. It prevents an AoO provoked by attacking unarmed. It covers all forms of unarmed attacks, not simply unarmed strikes.

Tripping without a weapon provokes an AoO as normal for an unarmed attack. IUS means you don't provoke an AoO for attacking unarmed.

Thanks guys. This was exactly what I was looking for.

Sometime my brain gets editions confused and thinks that things shoudl be more difficult that they really are...

Thanks once again.

Note that it is impossible to trip without using either an unarmed strike or a tripping weapon.

Someones going to jump all over this, so I'll just point out that you really meant an unarmed attack, as an unarmed strike may be subset of unarmed attacks.

In actuality, it's impossible to trip with an unarmed strike because an unarmed strike is not a tripping weapon. You trip with a specific weapon (such as a kama) or with an unarmed attack, not specifically an unarmed strike unarmed attack.
