True 20 and Grim Tales

Like oranges and tangelloes, mostly.

True20 is a "rules lite" 3-class system ... Warrior / Expert / Adept. Things are simplified (ability scores are just their bonus), your character is mostly taking feats every level, and instead of HP you have Damage Saves.

Both are sort of "toolkits" that can be applied to a variety of settings. The new True20 has some setting snippets in the back, all of which are pretty good.

It may be just me, but I think both systems are pretty good. I've used GrimTales since it came out, and I haven't been burning down the house to use True20. For instance, I've been putting together a new scifi setting to play ... I could have put it into any system, but I chose to do a GrimTales-Laced d20Future game instead of True20.

So how does True 20 compare to Grim Tales?
I have both. I would say they share the same philsophy where it comes to create PCs and NPCs. However, Grim Tales is d20, and thus you can still use most of your d20 books with it, which is not really the case with True20 despite conversion guidelines (it's feasible but requires much tedious work). On the other hand, Grim Tales being d20, takes longer prep time and a slower paced game. Lastly, concerning magic, GT spellcasters are probably much less effective than True20 spellcasters.

Taking the risk of self-pimping, I'd say come over the the GT-SRD (see sig) and see what you think of Grim Tales for yourself.

I can't say much about True20, as I know nothing about it :-) I can echo what Turtanil said: GT is d20, so most everything d20 works with little/no conversion, and prep time for a GT game is about the same as d20 Modern, for me. Because of GTs 'mooks' optional rules (mooks just take hits until massive damage, then die) setup often consists of statting only 'boss' characters.

Looks great. Do you incorporate the Mythic Heroes material (or plan to)?

I've looked through True20. It's pretty solid. The main differences are:

The 3d6-based array of ability scores are dropped (D&D really only maintains it for legacy purposes anyway). Instead of an 18 Str, you have a +4 Str. No big whoop, purely superficial.

Damage is tracked differently (although the claim that there are no hit points to tally is somewhat deceptive).

There are a basic list of powers, which are the basis of spells. The limiting factors that govern their usage (and deter overusage) are fatigue and concentration, rather than a limited number of uses per day.

Unless Kirin'Tor and Ben Durbin have an additional deal, it's not likely. IIRC, it was just for the main rules set. (Notice the Cyber rules, magic rules, et. al. are also not included).

Indeed, at this time the GT-SRD is complete (barring any errors), and there aren't any plans to add more material to it. If Ben wanted more material added to it, I'd be more than happy to do so.

What about a character generator? I'd heard-tell of that, but it's sort of fallen off the radar.

It's still in progress - It's my current personal project. Current details about progress are always in my blog.

I'd love to project a release date, but I've spent way too much time around Mynex & the other Code Monkeys to do such a thing. I know it seems far away, but my goal is 'before christmas'. Keep in mind, this is a pro-bono (aside from the free linking) project :-)

FYI the site is currently down, and I'm working with the host to find out why...
