Trying to house rule the psion (more powers)

As I mentioned in my post (and note I wasn't arguing for/agaisnt psion/sorcerer) ... If Thoughts Could Kill is one of the best alternatives I've seen and played.

By doing what you're proposing, a Psion could potentially have access to all the powers (like a Wizard has access to all spells) AND be able to use any he wished as long as he had power points.

A sorcerer cannot do this, neither can a wizard (unless he leaves empty slots). It would be too open for abuse and too powerful a modification.

You could perhaps use the idea about power chaining (forget the site but I think it was either WOTC, or Sean Reynolds). Essentially if you learn a higher level version, you can forget the lower level one.

We weren't off-topic. My entire point was that Psioncs are just fine as-is, balanced with a similar class from the PHB. There was some disagreement on the specifics, but the consensus seemed to be that they were more or less balanced.

If you include If Thoughts Could Kill, I think they become stronger than the PHB classes, although not by much. Mind's Eye is an effective substitute for their missing splatbook

Now, if you provide a simple mechanism for unlimited spells known, they become more powerful than any PHB class (except Cleric, of course...). It doesn't matter how often it happens, because Psion players will search those encounters out. They'll buy those stones, they'll make them for each other, whatever.

What you COULD do is say that Sorcerers and Psions need to actually learn the spell from somewhere. It's not just "I levelled, ooh, I can cast four new spells now!" You need to find a teacher, but those stones can substitute. No time needed, no Psicraft roll, whatever.

Plus a psion with the Master Dorje feat can use any power up to 4th level as long as he can get ahold of the dorje. Add in Drilbus from the web enhancement and the Master Drilbu feat and you have your psionicist able to use any power, he just has to work a little more at it.

The same could be said about sorcerer and Master Wand/Master Staff.

The key thing to remember:
preparation=unlimited spells known. The need for advanced prep renders the large # of spells less useful.

spontaneous=limited spells known. When you can do anything you know whenever you want, as long as you have the power (which psions are better at than sorcerers because they can effectively "trade-up" powers, which sorcerers cannot do with spells), you must be tightly limited in spells known otherwise you completely outclass other spellcasters.

Spatz: you brought up a good point about Mind's Eye. We have house ruled that if you use IFTCK then you cannot use a lot of Mind's Eye. That solves any imbalance issues.
